YYC-YKF -YYC Cancelled March 1st, Why?
Does anybody know why WJA484 YYC-YKF and 485 YKF-YYC was cancelled on Monday March 1, 2010?

Apparently you think I owe some kind of duty to a poster on his very first posting to this website, who also supplies no background as to who he/she is, or why they're asking a specific question. You're funny.

Why bother replying at all if are not going to add anything constructive to the topic?

Does it really matter why it was cxl? If you were scheduled on that flight, they told you the reason...

Ohh alright. I had hoped to educate the OP about the civility required when popping in to new forums. A little hello, how ya doin', mind if I ask a question, kind of thing...
Anyway, my day was messed up that day as well. Our flight was delayed 8 hours and affected the flights mentioned above. Essentially, there was no a/c available to operate 484/485.
The maintenance defect couldn't be MEL'd, hence a part had to be flown in, with extra engineer to help the local guy make the install. It was a 3 hour fix. In technical jargon, it was a faulty fuel scheduling/monitoring unit in the Fully Automated Reduced Takeoff Thrust system (FARTTs). Essentially, there wouldn't have been enough gas going through the FARTTs, if we'd elected to do a Reduced Thrust takeoff. Hope that helps.

And we do reduced thrust takeoffs on a routine basis, hence the problem...

On the old -200's, the system wasn't automated, like it is on the NG. Back then the system was a pneumatic system, with a blow off valve, that automatically expelled overpressure situations into a continuous flow igniter, that burnt off any residuals (BLU Angel feedback). Catch 22, but if the FO on a -200 had been doing his standup, and encountered a BLU Angel feedback, it would have been a simple call to mtce, a little MEL in the book, and off you went!
Technology eh?

Wow, some sharp eyed readers out there! To those two of you who PM'd me asking about using the Backup FARTTs, I was one step behind you!
Yes it is possible to go with the Secondary FARTTS u/s...but only if the Primary FARTTS can be recalled by pressing the Master Caution. In our situation, this was not the case. Technically, we had a Double FARTTS failure.

But you don't have to, do you? Couldn't you just go balls-to-the-wall for that take-off under a M.E.L.? I'm curious, I'm not familiar with the 737.jonny dangerous wrote:And we do reduced thrust takeoffs on a routine basis, hence the problem...

No the "Integrated Drake Isohail Output Temperature Sensors" (IDIOTS) Wouldn't allow that.

Conehead, up until 2 years ago we could have dispatched legally. In June 2008, Boeing issued its Fuel Legacy Automated Thrust Update System (FLATUS), due to the high price of jetfuel at the time. WestJet adopted FLATUS eagerly and our pilots are now industry leaders. Under FLATUS, inoperative FARTTs are a NO-GO item.

Thanks jonny. Sounds like a bunch of flatulence to me!

Thanks for your time and effort in answering my question, greatly appreciated!
By the way before I typed my question, I did remove everything in my pockets and I took off my shoes!

Anytime, Westhigh Flyer.
I hope your plans were not too affected by the cancellation of those flights. As much as I believe we have the best IROPS team in the country, there's not much that removes the sting of delayed/cancelled plans. Hopefully, we'll fully meet your expectations next time.

Thank the Maker (no, not Boeing) you didn't take off. Without the FARTTs, you could have possibly been left in a Grossly Antiquated Situation, and last time I checked, no one likes GAS. Besides, you guys really like your FARTTs in YYC, hence the bloated ROT (runway occupancy times)
Btw, wicked postings there, jonny dangerous.
