An American Airlines plane made an emergency landing

Post by midwingcrisis »

Font Size: (CNN) -- An American Airlines plane made an emergency landing in Iceland Tuesday after passengers complained of fumes in the cabin, an airline representative told CNN.

American Airlines Flight 49, a Boeing 767-300, was bound for Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, from Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, France, said Tim Smith, an airlines spokesman in Dallas.

It landed around 1:50 p.m. local time (9:50 a.m. ET) with 133 passengers and 12 crew on board, Smith said.

Fumes of some type were reported on board, he said, adding that it was standard procedure for such aircraft to be inspected. Paramedics were meeting the plane for anyone feeling ill, he said.

The passengers and crew have been taken off the plane, with five or six complaining of dizziness from the fumes, said a Keflavik International Airport spokesman.

The incident is now being investigated by the Icelandic aviation authority, added the spokesman, Fridthor Eydal.

A replacement plane is being sent to Iceland so the passengers can continue their journey, American Airlines spokesman Richard Hedges said.

The airline has no reports of passengers or crew needing medical treatment, he said. Mechanics are examining the plane to determine the source of the reported fumes.

-- -- CNN's Carol Jordan, Claudia Rebaza, Hank Bishop and Eileen Hsieh contributed to this report.

Any ideas to what the smell/fumes could have been?
