Ref: http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/re ... 5854128823A PILOT training for the Red Bull Air Race is believed to have escaped relatively uninjured after his plane plunged into Perth's Swan River.
The pilot, Brazilian Adilson Kindlemann, has been rushed to Royal Perth Hospital, but police spokewoman Ros Weatherall told WAToday.com that he had suffered minor injuries.
The race is to be held this weekend in Perth.
The 36-year-old is new to the race this year and the first South American to fly in the Red Bull Air Race.
"Adilson Kindlemann was involved in an accident at 11.50am while participating in today's training session ... at this stage we are unable to give specific details regarding the accident," Red Bull Air Race CEO Bernd Loidl told a media conference.
"Emergency response teams were on the scene in minutes and it is confirmed that Kindlemann was taken to the Royal Perth hospital and it is confirmed that he is in good condition.
"The Red Bull Air Race team has pledged its full co-operation with the relevant authorities to establish why this accident has occurred. Further updates will be provided," Loidl said.
Marianne Cashim, a Victorian tourist who was watching the planes go through their paces, said the pilot was only in the water for a few minutes before he was pulled out.
“He appeared to be coming out of a turn, he was quite low to the water and it was like his wing just clipped something and he dropped straight in,” Ms Cashim said.
“He was in the water for only a few minutes, they pulled him out very quickly.
“I'm not sure if he got himself out or they got him out, but help was there very quickly and they took him off in the ambulance.”
The race, which is held at various locations around the world, involves 13 pilots who complete time trials at speeds of up to 400km/h, whizzing through inflatable pylons above the blue water of the Swan River.

Glad he's OK!!
what kind of safety features do those planes have that contributed to him surviving... anyone know? I wonder how much a factor hitting wings level played...Thats pretty incredible he survived and has been said to be in "good condition". great news

Stall? Not really familiar with this plane, or air racing in general. Glad to see he made it out.
Re: Red Bull Air Race Crash
Yeah, you can see the aileron put in almost immediately but it doesn't roll level until just before the hit.

Re: Red Bull Air Race Crash
All race aircraft have Spare-Air canisters, as depicted above. As a side note, having a Spare-Air onboard would be a heck of an idea for the float drivers reading to consider.
Crash due to high speed stall trying to make the corner, as seen on film. Fast thinking to level wings with the solitary functional control surface remaining in this specific flight condition before splash-down. Could have been worse. Best wishes for Adilson's recovery and continuation of the season.
