I don't know where I'm gonna go when the volcano blows. . .

Post by Panama Jack »

Who would have thought that I would be grounded by a volcano on a routine flight to London?

As of 11:00Z, Heathrow is quiet like an aviation museum and UK airspace is closed for an indefinate period of time.

International flights already in the air yesterday headed to UK were ordered to land elsewhere or return to point of departure.
Lots of EU airspace shutting down.

  Wow

AC is only warning of the airspace closure for today. Airport hotels are going to thrive and airlines are not going to be happy. Ha, what a mess... :(

How is the sky in London Panama Jack? Here in Glasgow it's a nice blue sky.

I wonder if the UK is not over reacting...

I wonder how many passengers are blaming the airlines for the volcano.

AirBanana, the sky here in Hounslow is unremarkable, just a typical looking day.

The media has put Captain Eric Moody (of BA 747 4-engine flame-out over SE Asia fame) on the news to convince everyone that it is infinitely better to be safely on the ground, wishing you were flying, than flying wishing you were safely on the ground.

Just heard on the news, "The ash has gone up to 55,000 feet, exactly the altitude most airliners fly at." Right on.

Put on an extra 22,000 liters (over their initial destination fuel load) last night on a European operator just to get them close to their destination. How does anyone make money in this biz?

He has to sue the Sun- the abnormally prolonged lull in solar activity we currently experienced ( between solar cycle 23 ending a few years ago, and solar cycle 24 uncharacteristically refusing to start ) is screwing with the magma.

http://articles.adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi- ... lassic=YES

" Possible Correlation Between Solar And Volcanic Activity In a Long Term Scale "

" ...prolonged maxima of solar activity correspond to prolonged minima of volcanic activity, and vice-versa..."

I think there's enough evidence for a civil tort against the sun to compensate this poor asthma afflicted earthling-but not enough to suit the more demanding evidence rules of a criminal trial ...(:

Also, if he won, somehow he'd have to go way out there to the sun to collect......maybe he just wants a morale victory.

They should give him the title to the sun that way everyone could sue him for damages when they get sunburnt :-)

That would probably be the straw that broke the camel's back, given the country's financial crisis.

My flight tomorrow with AF is cancelled. I got a booking with their partner Delta direct to Atlanta then YYZ.

One day of my trip extended which is nice, except now I have to fly on a US Carrier, to the US.... :(

Love the picture Sandy106. Don't forget to stick them on the pitot tubes and static ports also.

The threat, evidently, is very real:

They said on the news 17 000 cnx flights! Brutal.

So isn't there another way to flight plan? Sure direct is the shortest one, but this planet is a sphere isn't it?

Depends on were you want to go.

Over LHR and most parts of Europe the ash concentration is forecast from Ground to FL200. In some areas it goes into the upper levels. So the problem is even taking off.

London Heathrow today is a blue, sunny sky but a very thin haze-- nothing unusual for people from the Middle East, but here it is not dust today.

From the looks of it, with the way things are going you might start cancelling flights in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland in a few days also.
