Life in the Knife...

Post by down north »

Hello Everyone

Looks like I will be heading to Yellowknife shortly.

How is life living and working in Yellowknife?
How are vacancy rates and the housing & rental market?
Any good bars in town? What about shopping?
Are groceries ridiculously expensive?
How do NWT income tax rates compare to the rest of Canada?
Anyone do the drive via Alberta? Any tips or advice on driving?

Does Yellowknife have the same "Northern" problems many other northern communities experience?

I love the outdoors, particularly camping & canoeing. Any good camping spots?
I would imagine the fishing is great!
How is the social scene up there?

How is life living and working in Yellowknife?
-Can be some of the best days of your life, some people love it some hate it, you gotta decide for yourself, just dont cheap out on a winter jacket

How are vacancy rates and the housing & rental market?
-$500-700 with a few roomates, $1300+ if you live by youself. Check out YKTrader.com or northern properties website for some rates. The coldwell banker also rents houses some people rent through them

Any good bars in town? What about shopping?
-Define good.If your looking for trendy, classy little joints your out of luck, if your looking to have a few to many and have fairly low standards your in luck.

-As for shopping YKtrader.com, the dump is just a mile north of town off the Ingram Trail, Walmart. (there are a few more stores than that dont worry, you'll have no problem finding the essentials)

Are groceries ridiculously expensive?
-Not ridiculous, most items are a little more expensive than down south but you wont notice it to much.

How do NWT income tax rates compare to the rest of Canada?
-Honestly cant remember how they compare but they arent to bad once you factor in your Northern Living Allowance of $7.50 per day ($15 if you live on your own)

Anyone do the drive via Alberta? Any tips or advice on driving?
-If going up this time of year make sure you have the number to check the status of the ferry, Just because its operating one day doesn't doesnt gaurantee that it will be the next day. Heavy ice flow can shut it down without much warning. Once past there watch out for buffalo!!! And be sure to drive slowly the last hour or two the road gets VERY bumpy.

Does Yellowknife have the same "Northern" problems many other northern communities experience?
-YK has the same problems as any major city. Most of the people of Yellowknife are southerners who are up there to work, There are some "locals" who do fufill the stereotype but the northern communities are completly different from the city.

I love the outdoors, particularly camping & canoeing. Any good camping spots?
-Just take a drive down the ingrahm trail you'll find a campground

I would imagine the fishing is great!
-Yes

How is the social scene up there?
-Your a pilot, so you have something in common with alot of people, lots of parties very transient town so there are many people in a similar situation as you. As long as you have a personality you should be able to make it

Are you going to work the ramp up there? If so be prepered for a long haul, maybe think of what you will be giving up to go up there. If your planning to do a couple years on the ramp you will be treated like crap by some people who think they are gods gift to aviation.I would form good bonds with your peers because thats who will get you ahead, not the aholes.
