From ASN; The Lockheed Hercules sustained substantial damage in a landing accident at Sharana AB, Afghanistan. The airplane came to rest beside the runway. The number 4 propeller separated from the engine and the undercarriage was pushed up into the wheel wells.
Sharana has a single asphalt runway (14/32) measuring 4265 X 82 feet. The runway has a 2,5 degree slope. Crews are a.o. warned for a 25-200ft drop off on both sides of runway shoulders.

Weird to see 2 feathered props, one fine, and one ripped off? Strange shut down sequence that one...
Re: Hercules hard landing in Afghanistan - photos . . .
Maybe they should learn how to fly the airplane.
Btw, there's no such thing as an "emergency" by losing one of your four engines, unless, of course, you have no bloody idea what you're doing.

Bet the crew were all wearing fur collars. That was one very hard landing, the Herc doesnt bend wings, lose props off engines, and have the gear punched into the hold like that unless the rate of descent is HUGE.....
Re: Hercules hard landing in Afghanistan - photos . . .
Depends on the issue. If one of those fans doesn't fx or if pitch locks at an inopportune time it is very much an emergency especially when working with a field elevation of 7000'+ at 30C. Of course you knew that because you're clearly a genius.Btw, there's no such thing as an "emergency" by losing one of your four engines, unless, of course, you have no bloody idea what you're doing.

The RCMP brought this plane down, there's no question about it. Those guys are out to get us.cpl_atc wrote:Maybe they should learn how to fly the airplane.

Now go feed your cats, . Yeager.
Re: Hercules hard landing in Afghanistan - photos . . .
You might want to read that one again. It was a RAAF Herc that had an engine shutdown, smoke in the cabin that made a safe emergency landing at Richmond Air Base, Australia.cpl_atc wrote:Maybe they should learn how to fly the airplane.

The aircraft in the pictures is a Trans Afrique Herc had a hard, short landing in Sharana, Afghanistan .

Although by the pictures you could also say that the Transafrik Herc lost an engine! Would the props feather during an emergency shutdown, or does anyone think they might've come in with two feathered? Or worse yet, had two feather at the wrong time...

Both Candian and US military will declare an emergency if they lose an engine in a herc.cpl_atc wrote:Maybe they should learn how to fly the airplane.
