J3 CUB flight from Whitehorse, Yukon to Montreal, Quebec

Post by callmesam »

Hey guys,

Next week on the 4th of August, i will be taking an Air Canada flight from Dorval, Montreal to Vancouver, BC. Then i will be taking another flight up to Whitehorse Yukon.

The next day, I will be departing with a Piper J3 Cub and will be flying it back to Beloeil(near Montreal), Quebec. :D I will be bringing a "spot" gps locator with me for the flight so you guys can see my progress. The link will be posted soon. I'll also have a camera with me and a story to tell at my return

On wheels, but it would have been nice on floats to build up some float time...oh well, will be fun anyway :P

Callmesam, this should be a fun trip. I have done it twice, ounce with a PA, well I dont remember which PA but it was a Cherokee from YHU to Whitehorse and ounce with a PA22-150 taildragger from Whitehorse to Thompson, Man. in the 70's. What route are your planning? I lived in Whitehorse for four years. It is a great city.

A good stop on the way would be CJL5 (Lyncrest) listed under Winnipeg. Grass field, fuel available. There is usually someone around to give you a ride to the nearest motel, which is close, or you can use your tent. Tailwheels love grass.

Happy landings

"monney21", i'm planning on following the VFR route along the Alaska Highway, then the transcanada highway to montreal. It will not be exactly that but along those lines.

Thanks "fleetcanuck" for the tip,i'll stop in Lyncrest.

What a hoot. The J3 is one of my absolute favoriate planes. I'd be seeking out some unusual runways along the way for fun ;)

Sounds like a heck of a learning experience. Just watch the weather, don't push it.

Don't stray too far from the Trans Canada North and East of Superior. There's nowhere else to land if the engine or weather plays up. I've spotted a cropduster by the highway near Agawa Bay and a Turbo Beaver in Gargantua Harbor, both sitting out weather.

Anywhere there's a driveway or structure, expect a wire crossing the highway. North of Superior you can't see the poles for the trees.

Man that sounds like SOOOO much fun!!! Enjoy the ride and take lots and lots of pictures.. If there is one thing I've regreted in my career its not taking enough pictures.

You're not going anywhere real fast in a cub, so take your time and only fly when you're comfortable. Make the trip all about the journey and not the destination!

Have fun and fly safe!!! :)

Sam,

Your best scenery should be Watson Lake - Fort Nelson. Please send us some pics and fly safe!

Just to update on Sam's progress. He arrived in Lyncrest today and some of the regulars found some leftovers from our BBQ yesterday. The Cub is re-fueled and tied down for the night. We got some pictures of Sam and the Cub and I will post them as soon as I figure out that process.

Sounds like he is having a great journey across this beautiful country and is getting some great experience along the way. Now if the weather would just co-operate a bit more... But that is one of the joys of flying a light plane on a big cross country.

Sam

It is with both pride and admiration that I read about your adventure.
Very enterprising
What a fantastic way to build both hours and experience, You have done something most people your age don't even have the opportunity to do.
My first airplane was a Cub and as you well know now, a great airplane for fun flying.
My sincere congrats on a job well done.
I hope you have many more flying adventures and with an attitude like yours , I am sure you will go far.

Keep'em Flying

Sam is looking for a job by the way. Can anyone help? He has some float time and worked for outfitters last couple years.
