Request For Info From Monocular Pilots

Post by Old Dog Flying »

Last spring I went in for my medical and because I was unable to read the eye chart with the right eye, the Medical Examiner would not sign me off as monocular and neither would the RAMO. My file has now gone to the Appeals Board for review and I am left with trying to come up with justification why the restriction on my PPL should be lifted and a Monocular Waiver issued.

Many years ago as a new instructor, I trained my first monocular pilot and the issuance of a PPL was easy. And I know of q few monocular pilots who have had no trouble renewing their licences.

If anyone here has any information on the subject I would greatly appreciate your help. I have read CARS 424 and still am unable to make sense of the need for a review. I have 20/20 in the left eye and have demonstrated my ability to fly safely with a PPC by a well known DFTE.

I will keep all info confidential.

I heard of a guy who ended up having a brain tumor, which was removed surgically, but consequently left him blind in one eye. It took him a year to get his license back, and his medical was re-issued as "restricted to 2 crew".

In any case it worked out fine - he went back to his old job flying Twin Otters and the associated float and off strip flying with no problem.

So there is hope. If you are working in a 2 crew environment anyway, it shouldn't be a big deal getting yer medical back.

Good luck!
