Re: Headset
I was just in the same boat as you, wanted bose but the $$$$$$$ was a bit steep, DC are work horses but its like talking into a garbage can with the cheaper models, I ended up getting a set of Beyerdynamic HS400, they are great. For what they cost I was impressed.

I bought them from here cause they are not available in canada yet, you can also get the HS 300 for $130 less and they are very good too.

Re: Headset
If you're still worried about cost (the Zulu is around $850 I believe) then the Lightspeed 30-3G is a great option. I've used it quite a lot and it's a fantastic headset as well. I found it very comfortable and the ANR is very good. It's got a decent amount of passive noise cancellation as well so if your batteries die it's not the end of the world. I think it goes for $500-$600.

Re: Headset
David Clark H10-13.4 $300.00 and really comfortable. The new ones are great and I love mine. Id say Zulu too but you mentioned money is an issue.
If a pilot walked into a forest and had to make a decision, and no one from AVCANADA was there. Would the pilot still be wrong?
Re: Headset
I always used DC 13.4 before in work. Bought a noise-canceling kit and installed it myself. Works pretty nice. But at work now we have the Zulu's and I have to give them a big thumbs up! Very comfortable, and lots of cool features.

Re: Headset
Someone should put a sticky at the top with a page linking every headset discussion on this forum, that or have a dedicated product review forum maybe?
We can't stop here! This is BAT country!
Re: Headset
Right now $300 for a DC is sounding really good, but I am blown away by the support for the Zulu I have a friend that has the Zulu so maybe I'll try it out and save up!

Re: Headset
I own a David Clark H10-30 since 1995. 24dB of passive noise reduction (more than any other passive headset, except for the H10-20 (also 24 dB) which is like a H10-30 with the H10-13.4 microphone). Classic look coupled with the legendary David Clark reliability and reputation.
The David Clark H10-30 also appear to be the least expensive headset among the high end passive noise reduction headsets.

Totally irresponsible, unnecessary, dangerous, immature and reprehensible. In other words brillant!

Another vote for the ZULU!
One will soon replace my tried, trusty and true DC 13.4

Re: Headset
My DC 10-60 has been great since I got it in 2006, only problem was a blown earseal which is easy to replace. Good feature on this one is the cable disconnects from the headset so you dont bend it too much when you wrap it up.
Been thinking about the zulu as it seems to be the general opinion that it's the best and cheapest high end headset, but I've always been a little wary about how much passive noise reduction there is if/when your batteries fail? thoughts?

Re: Headset
Just bought a new 13.4. Love it. Pardon? Speak up......too late for me to waste money (for me) on a ARC/ERC headset...but if I were younger....Zulu...hands down.

The best "Brown Bear" of them all!

Re: Headset
On the Zulu, passive sucks. But I think it is only in comparison to the absolutely wonderful active noise attenuation (I can't stand my H20-10s anymore). It's too bad that most of the ANR manufacturers don't give passive dB levels.burninggoats wrote:but I've always been a little wary about how much passive noise reduction there is if/when your batteries fail? thoughts?
I just bring extra batteries. Mine last between about 30 hours with Bluetooth going and over 50 without....

Re: Headset
I've tried the Bose X ANR and the David Clark equivalent ANR, side by side in the same cockpit and I honestly can say I liked the DC better. I was surprised because the price difference (at the time) was significant and Bose has such a name in the audio world I honestly expected better. But, doing some research for a home stereo, a few audiophiles and multiple online forums - the consensus is Bose is highly marketed, very pretty, tons of testimonials, but honestly isn't really all that good. It's a brand name for yuppies mostly, but there are many better mainstream and cheaper products made that actually perform better - generally speaking. DC is a reputable and solid name (not due to shopping channel info-mercials either) in the headset business.
I use a DC 13.4 right now and although it's not ANR (which I don't need), it is a super headset. Quiet, great sound, very comfortable and for the $, probably the absolute best bang for your buck out there.
