air canada visual acuity requirements

Post by naim »

Hi everybody,

I'd just like to know if visual acuity (and refraction error by the way - myopia) requirements at Air Canada are different as for TC Class1 's.
Is it usual for major or national airlines to upgrade the requirements for visual acuity, compared with just what is needed to get the class1 (here in canada, and worldwide)?

Thanks a lot.

Lufthansa in europe for exemple: to apply, you may not exceed +/-3d refraction, whereas it's just required to be less than -6d refraction in admission for JAR Class1. What's for Aircanada?

I hesitate to mention the words, given their history in this Forum. But here they are.

Canadian Human Rights Act. No discrimination.

General
Prohibited grounds of discrimination

3. (1) For all purposes of this Act, the prohibited grounds of discrimination are race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, family status, disability and conviction for which a pardon has been granted.

Air Canada used to impose all sorts of fiery hoop requirements on their physical standards. Not any more. Its illegal.

Yes and no. They still have the "right" to scrutinize potential candidates medical fitness as they want pilots that will be able to perform their duties without them immediately being placed on medical leave. They made me jump through several additional "fiery" hoops before I was medically cleared due to myopic vision. I wear contacts that correct me to 20/20 but unaided it is embarrassing, I am lucky to be looking at the correct wall with the eye chart. Additional, optometrist visits and even a visit to an ophthalmologist to show that my eyes weren't diseased... just weak. It was challenging to get to see the specialist (Ophthalmologist) as my Optometrist wouldn't refer me to the specialist because there was nothing wrong! I figure I lost around 40 seniority numbers while this was in play.

It all worked out. So to answer your question, if your vision is weak like mine, they may have you visit a specialist to prove there is nothing wrong with your eyes but it wont preclude them from hiring you.

Good luck.

I was about -3.25 in each eye but corrected to 20-20.I got hired without further tests.
I asked the doctor what they were checking exactly and he said that if you can pass a TC class 1 then you don't have anything to worry about.(This was regarding vision since that was my big concern.I don't know about blood tests etc....)

IF you are deemed unfit, you would never know the reason. You would be informed that you do not meet the criteria at this time, without an explanation of what that reason might be - exactly because of the legal issues. That could be your education or experience don't meet the threshold of that hiring's matrix. Could be others in that group are more suitable, and experienced. Would AC be required to turn in people that have a blood test with some unacceptable trace in their blood? Someone that might be accessed psychologically unacceptable by their assessment? etc, etc.

Apply and find out. If you don't buy a lottery ticket you have NO chance; if you do, you have A chance. Hey, they were scraping the bottom of the barrel when they hired me
