I watched that tonight, I thought SMS was suppose to cure all evils. When you leave saftey to the operator, economics dictates the level of saftey. Thats what privatization will do for you!
Son, Your gonna have to make your mind up about growing up and becoming a pilot.. You can't do both!!
Re: CBC - are you logging ALL snags?
The “napkin snag” has been around for decades and still in operation today. To suggest that it is rare today is like an ostrich with your head in the sand. It is ironic how snags are found and repaired during regular inspections, but the aircraft never have any snags between shop visits.
Still many operators of small commercial aircraft resist utilizing the MEL system.

Re: CBC - are you logging ALL snags?
Besides additional paperwork, why would someone not want to use an MEL?
Re: CBC - are you logging ALL snags?
Horrible to get one approved - if the manufacturer hasn't made a MMEL, you have to start from scratch. If there is a master minimum equipment list, it's basically a matter of making sure it's legal per CARs and putting your logo at the top.

Pilots not entering snags in the logs?
I'm appalled .... simply appalled.
Reminds me of a certain fairly large operator in Thompson who used to blatantly fire pilots for snagging things that were broken.
Jeepers Creepers ..... management complaining about snag entries being made .... I'm speechless.
....And whats more .... those fresh from Broadcast Journalism Class bright lights at the Communist Broadcasting Commune (CBC) have determined the issue is not confined to Quebec ... imagine the ramifications.

Oh ... and speaking o Dan-o .... good to see Daniel Slunder speaking the facts in that article.

This still happens today with other operators that seemingly have SMS's in place. The Old Fogducker wrote:Reminds me of a certain fairly large operator in Thompson who used to blatantly fire pilots for snagging things that were broken

this was happening before SMS was around. SMS might not be a solution to the problem, but it certainly isn't the cause.electraguy wrote:I watched that tonight, I thought SMS was suppose to cure all evils. Re: CBC - are you logging ALL snags?
Can somebody help me find the section in the CARs that cover the snags reporting?
I checked a few days ago, but could not locate it.
Thanks,

Totally irresponsible, unnecessary, dangerous, immature and reprehensible. In other words brillant!
Re: CBC - are you logging ALL snags?
Look in CAR 604 for log book requirements
As far as getting a MEL approved on a timely basis in the west good luck, they go out of their way to slow the process
TC got rid of the GMEL process
Would be nice if one could use the master MEL, the FAA have a master for most if not all aircraft

Re: CBC - are you logging ALL snags?
Just wait - all MEL's in canada are now being suspended because TC has realized that nobody has been updating their MEL's to match the FAA ones - including TC. There is no process in place for doing this and they are finding all sorts on manuals that are out of revision.
Hold on - it's comming down the pipe.

Re: CBC - are you logging ALL snags?
This problem is not limited to the small operators. For the airlines 85% of all defects entered in the log book by pilots are made after arriving at home base even though less than 50% of all flights terminate at home base.

Re: CBC - are you logging ALL snags?
I'm sure glad that this issue is regionally confined to Quebec, and doesn't happen anywhere else. Maintenance departments must be thrown into chaos with that type of informal system....just imagine the nightmare of tracking defects and rectifying them. Not to mention the hapless pilot taking the next flight who is unaware of the situation.
I imagine this only happens with "non-critical" defects, that "don't affect safety". What good is a pilot who can't differentiate between a 'safety' snag, and any other type?? You'd think that pilots left their "common sense" at home when they came to work sometimes.
And as for people getting fired for snagging the shit out of a junk-box...? Good Lord, did they really need to go that far?? Just get the crew chief or DOM to 'lean' on the offenders a few times and that should solve those few 'problem' pilots. This is best handled diplomatically, at the top of your voice, and with several other potential 'offenders' present.
