There are twenty questions and it's very easy to complete. It took me about three or four minutes.

When I did the test I wasn't surprised with the results for the company that I'm currently working for. It's worth mentioning that I didn't need this test to know that there were issues with this particular company; which I will soon be leaving as a result of those issues. But i'm curious as to whether small 703 operations would be able to score high on this test even if the company was reputable and safe. I think that the test is geared more towards a larger company than a "ma and pa" style small 703 operation. So if you get a second, complete the test found at the link and then let us know what you think.

Does your score seem close to what the company is actually like in your opinion?

I'm not interested in knowing anything specific about companies other than the size, amount of aircraft and employee's. Just curious if you think that this test could be considered accurate.

Interpreting your score

16-20 So healthy as to be barely credible.

11-15 You’re in good shape, but don’t forget to be uneasy.

We are all a part of the flight safety team, and working to make things better!

I found the survey format limiting. All the questions were asking if the company does or does not do positive things. You could only gain or not gain points for doing something. I think they should incorporate questions that ask if the company does negative things and subtract points for any "yes" answers.

For example: One question was "Top management adopts a proactive stance toward safety. That is, it does some or all of the following: takes steps to identify recurrent error traps and remove them; strives to eliminate the workplace and organizational factors likely to provoke error; brainstorms new scenarios of failure; and conducts regular “health checks” on the organizational process known to contribute to mishaps." A company may do this, thus earning a point in the survey.

However, the same company may also conveniently turn a blind eye to employees operating against rules (not necessarily unsafe, just against the rules), employees operating under pressure applied by customers or jobs that are simply inherently high risk.

Of course some of the higher risk jobs (not saying unsafe or illegal) may be recognized and accepted at some companies. Maybe this could be a question the survey could ask.

My opinion is the survey has little value due to it being too small of a snapshot. To get an honest picture of the safety culture within the industry, the survey would have to be much longer. It my take more time to complete, however, I think it would render more valuable results.
