Post 9000

Post by Hedley »

Goodness. You go away for a day, and ...

Anyways, I put considerable thought into my topic for Post 9000.

The appropriate amount of posterity was required. Not quite as much
as was in my face as when I loaded Mikey in the Pitts, but ...

My first idea was a dissertation on Women & Porn. A
fascinating (and internet relevant!) topic as to why men are so captivated
by porn, and women are almost always revulsed by it.

One way I like to amuse myself is to have my gf read the titles and
summaries of the pay-per-view porn movies available on the Bell
satellite dish - channels 750+. The incongruous combination of ludicrious
attempts at porn plot, and her obvious distaste, can always make me
laugh out loud. Have your SO do it, and see for yourself. Maybe you
should wait until the kids go to bed, though, unless you want them to
grow up as warped as mine did.

Another fantastic idea suggested to me for Post 9000 was a graphic novel
entitled "AvCan Moderator Orgy", but alas, I lack any noticeable
artistic drawing skills. And, some might say, literary ability. Too bad - I
think we would have had a winner there, if we had been staffed with
adequate resources.

Then it hit me, like a wet, eight pound Halibut across the bare buttocks -
something that every reader on AvCan enjoys without exception, is when
I post pictures of me, my family and friends having fun with airplanes. And
cars. And boats. And motorcycles. And potato guns. Truth be known, we
have more fun than any 10 people you know

Enjoy!

What a coincidence, this very topic came up a few days ago. My sister-in-law's roommate had to go clean out some boxes at her parents house, and came across a paper she'd written while at university on "Feminism & Pornography". I think her degree is in sociology or something along those lines.

Congratulations on your 9000 posts, I like to read them-they're usually either pretty useful or entertaining.

Nice photos also, -although I think that jet is pretty useless for counting cows, the main reason that the airplane was invented. :P
What is the stall speed on that machine, just out of curiosity ?

You can afford a strap on that reads and talks? Boy is mine a one trick pony.

Congrats on 9000!

What is the stall speed on (L39)
Ballpark range 90 to 105K at 1 G, depending upon config. Manual recommends 125K short final, but that's a bit too fast for our 4,000 foot runway - I prefer 115K over the threshold, which is 85% of kinetic energy of 125K.

The following video has a landing at 0:40 which gives you an idea of the visuals:

Central America is a different world. That's just what they have on the front page of their newspaper.

There's nothing better than doing a Central America airshow!

Thanks. That's me in the green PT-17 Stearman in lead (modified with R-985
to 450hp with inverted fuel and oil and smoke system) and Eric in right wing
in the Fairchild PT-19 (in Canada, PT-26 Cornell) and the ringer from Miami
that we bring up, flying the PT-22 Ryan. I lead the flight at 95 mph, everyone
seems happy. Must be a very odd-sounding formation! You don't see that
combination of aircraft very often!

Francois Bougie in his polished Globe Swift flew the camera plane, upsun of
course! Photo credit to Serge Pharand, who despite his heart transplant
seems to quite enjoy aerobatics.

Here's a picture of me doing a banana pass in the C421. Keep in mind this
picture was taken from the ground:

Image

and here's the cockpit of the 421 before the G530 went in:

This is my buddy Freddy flying Todd's rare Stearman Speedmail.
IIRC the Kimballs in Zellwood restored it:

Geez, lucky I got in early for the Stearman shot. 'Course now I got two more backgrounds, that 421 and the Speedmail. Fantastic. You remember the registration of that Swift, is it FHV or FKV, something like that? A friend of mine used to own a bare-metal Swift back in the 1970's. He sold it I believe it was to Francois Bougie.

That's it! Francois flies that polished Globe Swift very well, IMHO.
Flies very nice slot (diamond) dissimiliar formation, including landing.

We had the brainchild of flying the Beech 18 in lead, Bob in the PT-22
Ryan on right wing, me and Eric (checkout flight) in the PT-19 on left
wing, and Francois in slot over to Gatineau for static display at one of
the airshows this year - I think July 4?

Very unique and odd-sounding diamond formation! I'm glad we had
the ringer from Miami in the Beech 18 - it was staggering through the
air with the flaps down, occasionally stalling as it tried to slow down
for the Ryan.

Next time we did that, I flew lead in the Stearman at 95 mph and the
PT-22 Ryan and PT-19 Fairchild were much happier

Eric is funny - he doesn't like me leading, he thinks it's a waste to
put me on anything but wing.

Gosh, I like flying the old stuff. No glass cockpits, but all the
nostalgia you can handle. And you can do aerobatics in them!

The Stearman Speedmail is an interesting airplane. Everyone knows the PT-13/PT-17 Boeing Stearman WWII trainer, but the Speedmail is a really neat airplane. Designed in the late 1920's for air mail delivery in the USA, less than 40 were built in the late 1920's and early 1930's. This one is particularly spectacular example - it's a pristine restoration. It looks pretty good for an 80 year old

If you're ever passing through Key West, you can see it parked in the Conch Republic Air Force hangar, alongside Freddy's newly-restored Waco UPF-7, which is a working airplane, carrying tourists around the island:

Whoaaa nice job! GEGH is totally reborn, looks brand new!

I flew survey a little with it in 2001, then was asked to ferry it from Montréal to Peterborough in Feb 2003 where it was put for sale.
Check the logbook and you will understand my Avcanada "nom de plume"

GEGH was at the time a scary piece of sh!t flying snags.
And me very stupid to accept this last flight when I should have grounded it 10 times :bear:

Glad to see that someone finally put some cash to...well, rebuilt it instead of sending it to the scrap yard.

Edited for spelling.

The folks in Peterborough do nice work! New paint, new interior, new engines, King avionics. Pretty much everything works as advertised. It's a complicated airplane. I think I counted 11 fuel pumps, once

It has a Garmin 530 in it now. Very nice. I've flown it to the Bahamas - stopped once for fuel in Myrtle Beach.

A lot of people bad-mouth the 421, but they just don't understand geared engines, I guess. The 421 carries a fantastic load, even with a lot of gas. Very unusual for a piston twin, or any light aircraft.

Also has 11,000 feet of pressurization (and a great heater) so I generally file 15, 16 or 17 thousand feet (with a cabin pressure of 4 to 6 thousand), and I can get IFR GPS direct pretty well anywhere in North America, because that's empty airspace. Too high for most piston aircraft, too low for most turbine, and no stupid cannulas/masks. Gets me on top of a lot of (but certainly not all) wx.

I emotionally adore the Beech 18, but if you want to go somewhere - and bring some people with you - it's hard to beat the 421. Added bonus is that in Canada, no CAR 604/POC is required, as it would be for something comparable with turbines.

Never understood that Canadian hoax of turbine complexity. The L39 is far easier to fly than the C421 - much lower workload on departure and arrival. I wanna go down in the L39, just pull the N1 back to 56% flight idle and thumb the boards out. Can't do that in the 421! Turbines are so simple and reliable. Only trick to them, really, is avoiding a hot/hung start, and learning about Prist, which like plumbing, is generally mastered by most people in less than one day.

There is so much nonsense in aviation. It's a lot like the idiocy concerning child-rearing. I never know if people are just honestly screwed up, or they are intentionally spreading propaganda for a personal agenda.

Nice pics Hedley.

It looks like you have a static leak in the 421 though, your A/S's are off (5mph)
Also your EGT's probably need to be calibrated.

ASI: most pilots can't fly that accurately

EGT: they are weirdly, manually adjustable for relative peak. You're being fooled by the fuel flow spread. Absolute temperature is not very useful for EGT.
