First hour tomorrow

It looks like I'll have a restless night tonight.

Tomorrow I've got my first hour scheduled, getting that much farther ahead on the path to becoming a pilot. I'll be flying out of CYOW at 3:00pm. Weather is supposed to be sunny, -3 with a 5km/h wind.

I'll be in one of the ottawa flying club's 172's although I don't know which one. Got talking with an instructor when I was there picking up "From The Ground Up" and he'll be taking me up to have some fun.

I'll be attending confederation in the fall so i'm not looking to put in too much training before then, just to get my feet wet and see what I can pick up before I go.

Its been some time since i've been in a small aircraft. Put in a small flight in a piper (Aztec?) a couple years ago in the bahamas, an intro flight in a 152 when I was 16 and before that it was up at my grandfathers operation in Whitehorse in '98. Definitely itching for tomorrow to be here and excited to put my first hour in the logbook

haha, i dunno about a barrel roll but we will be doing some stalls and spins. I'm looking forward to a good time. I'm sure it will be an experience that i'll be able to remember and look back on with a grin.

Had an absolute blast. weather was beautiful and smooth. Flew at 3500' and did some stalls, turns, straight and level and then brought it in for my first landing.

I'm definitely hoping I can get up again before september, although any further time I put in will be at Smiths Falls as its a little closer to home.

Haha, i'd be too excited to be scared. I should be out there soon, I'm in the process of getting set up to meet Bob Hanson at some point and to check out his collection there.

I've been to the airport once but unfortunately the weather wasn't great so I didn't get a chance to see anything, but I've been meaning to head back out on a nicer day and shake hands with a few people. I'll pick up any knowledge I can get wherever I can get it. And it's all an opportunity to be around aircraft.

orignially I was going to bring it in most of the way and he was going to take it at 15ft, but i guess he was comfortable enough with what he saw that he had me bring it right in.

It was a great experience. Keeping in mind i'm not joining the school or anything, just putting some hours in to gain experience before the fall

I trained on a C150 but I didn't actually land until my 7th or 8th hour.

• First Hour - Fly back to the airport
  Second Hour - Enter the circuit
  Third Hour turn from downwind to base
  Fourth Hour - Base to Final
  Fifth hour - Final to Short Final
  Sixth Hour - Short Final to just off the runway
  Seventh Hour my first landing

Took me a total of 57.4 hours to get my PPL over an 18 month stretch and I don't regret a second.

My first hour was a fam flight bought for me when I was 16, about 1995. Was immediately talked out of pilot training by my parents (Weak math skills that turned out to be anything but, once I entered University). Fast forward to 2007. Graduated with a B.Sc.H. in Biology, promptly realized I didn't want to spend my days collecting flowers or staring into the eyes of fruitflies. 1 month after graduation I went to the Windsor Flying Club.
10-05-2007 was my first flight, .7 in a Traumahawk PA-38.
I went home from that flight and immediately posted my boat, seadoo, truck, and a car in the classifieds to finance the training. Probably the biggest mistake of my life, and I wouldn't change it for anything!! We get to fly planes and get paid for it!

Free advice to you and others in that situation: get yourself a reliable used car with a 4 cyl engine for good gas mileage, likely front wheel drive, probably 5 years old or so. Don't buy it on credit - buy it outright. Avoid debt. Hopefully it won't cost too much to insure. Get liability only for it. Put 500,000 km on it, driving across the country.

Good solid advice...I'd follow that as well, buuut....
I can do you one better- If you're so inclined, why not make a profit on vehicles? I buy and flip (that's resell... not "flip") cars and motorcycles constantly.
I usually buy cars that are desirable to kids on Kijiji, and a little bit rare. NEVER a Sunfire or Explorer. you'll be stuck with it forever. I aim for European or Japanese imports from the 90's and early 2000's after their first big depreciation dump. Buy em a little bit rough, but with easy fixes. Years of experience will tell you what that condition is.
I'll drive it as my own vehicle for a few months while I fix it up- my own labour is free, and then sell it for a profit. Rinse, lather and repeat!

The last 8 months:
VW Golf for $1200, put $200 and 28 hours into it and sold it for $3000.
Nissan Pathfinder- Bought for $2700, $400 and 6 hours into it, sold for $5000
Suzuki DR650- Bought for $2900, $80 into it, and sold for $3700.
Toyota Tacoma (1988!)- Bought for $2400, $400 and 2 hours into it, sold for 4000 ish.

Not everyone has the time for this, but if you have a CPL to finance, its a good way to keep you going!
I've probably had 10 cars and bikes in the last 2 years, and made money on every one including gas and insurance.

This is something I want to get into. I want to learn more about cars and get into fixer uppers. I just have no idea where to get started. As a soon to be student I have no way to pay for a car to fix it up, and I don't have the technical knowledge to fix it up in the first place. I'd really like to pick something up to get some hands on knowledge and be able to tinker but like I say it is difficult on a budget.

Hey, go for it. Unfortunately, as with any business, It's pretty hard to make any money without establishing yourself first. I spent the first 5-10 years after getting my drivers license building up an inventory of tools (1000's of $$) and dough into money pit hobby cars. You also need to have a few grand to float around, and the biggest secret? DON'T be in a rush to buy or sell anything. There are tons of vehicles out there, no emotion, they're only paint and metal. I've walked away from plenty of potential deals. It's impulse buying and selling by other people that you can profit from... try not to do it yourself.

I stick to >$1000 beaters now for our second vehicle. The world (mostly the car companies) tells you that these cars will be nothing but problems and burn too much gas, but I've had better luck with vehicles over 20 years old and over 300K than most newer ones.

I'm a fan of old Volvos (200 and 700 series), since they are RWD, four cylinder, super easy to maintain (same as a classic American car, except much better gas mileage), and dirt cheap to buy. If I was rich I'd buy a Civic, because the only ones you see for $1000 are absolutely thrashed.

My first hour with an instructor should be coming up soon. That being said I have some time at the controls on float already that I guess can't be counted. Was on my honeymoon. Wife and I went for a couple of flights in a beaver and I got to fly. The pilot, who was also an instructor, gave me the tail number and his name and said to count it if I ever go for my pilot's license haha.
