Re: Dash 8 - 300 landing
Some guys who fly King Air 100's pull the powers back until you activate the auto-ignition system (annunciators illuminate). They flare with that touch of power on before the mains are down and then you pull it back to full idle as the nose gear comes down. My roommate flies the Dash 8 and says he does sort of the same thing leaving just a touch of power on in the flare.

Re: Dash 8 - 300 landing
- Ref +10 till over the threshold and then pull off about 3-5%
- At 10' go back to the basics... Eyes down the runway and hold a slight nose up attitude (not too much in the Dash!)
If the wind gods are with you, it's a greaser every time.
Best of luck,
CK

Reduce power just prior to flaring until you hear a "SHHH SHHH SHHH" sound. One training Captain told me to "listen for the train". Not sure if it's blade angle or bleeds but you can for sure hear it. Gives you just enough power to land'r smoother without having to stare at the power gauges. I say smoother because hell, she's a dash.
The other option is to fly around looking for a wet runway. Your choice.

Re: Dash 8 - 300 landing
I'm guessing the -8 is similar to how the -5 lands. We could only grease our landings on wet runways and soft grass strips. Those damn long oleos.
Re: Dash 8 - 300 landing
Ref+5 and touch one main at a time. Unless runway length is critical, dont chop power until both mains are on ground.

Re: Dash 8 - 300 landing
There are three things you have to do in the proper order to successfully land a Dash-8 smoothly every time. Unfortunately no one knows what they are.
How DO you land a shopping cart smoothly anyway?

The first step to greasing on a Dash 8 is to lower your standards. Treat it like last call at a Sioux Lookout bar.
Re: Dash 8 - 300 landing
Who cares everyones standards of flying have gone way down by the time landing rolls around, they all just want off the piece of crap.

Re: Dash 8 - 300 landing
There's no consistency to landing the Dash. What worked every time on the last 9 ldgs won't work on #10.
I've been practicing for over 15 years and can't tell you what works except for one thing I used to tell new pilots:
"When you think you want to start the flare, don't. Wait another couple of seconds."
A little bit behind or at Vref and floating down the runway at a few feet, she'll let you know when she's done flying.
A bit of power in the flare always helps as well.

Re: Dash 8 - 300 landing
After a year and a half, I could still only land it as well as I could a shopping cart

I want to die like my grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming in terror like his passengers...

The best way to land a 300 is to land a 100, then from there everything is smooth.

The "piece of crap" has a great safety record .. I'd take that over anything else, any day.FL470 wrote:Who cares everyones standards of flying have gone way down by the time landing rolls around, they all just want off the piece of crap.
