Cuban cigars to Canada

Post by dtpilot »

Hey there,

Once and for all I'd like the final answer, if we can come up with it, as to whether or not you can bring Cuban cigars on a plane to Canada. The scenarios would be:

1. Flying from Mexico through the US and having to pick up your checked bag as you connect in, let's say Dallas, en route Vancouver.

2. Not having to pick up your checked bag when you connect through the US from Mexico (not sure if that's even possible).

3. Having a direct flight from Mexico to Canada.

4. Does using Nexus make a difference? I heard that if you had cigars in your bag you were not allowed to go through Nexus but had to see an agent.

Thanks!

The only exception is if your on an official US State visit to Cuba - you can bring back up to $100 US of cigars, if you are not on official US State visit - it is 100 percent illegal for you to bring into the USA Cuban cigars - period.

If caught - usually they'll open them up and break each and every one of them - however they have the power of arresting you, criminally charging you, and face up to $55,000 in fines. Nice.

Important to note, if you run into a customs officer who is a 'dick' - he not only has the power to arrest you, the only person who can release you is a US Immigration Judge - once arrested - even the Supervisors do not have the legal authority to release you!!!!

If you check the Canadian Border Services website it will tell you how many Cigars, How many cigarillos (or cigarettes) and how many bottles of booze you cah bring home, dependant on how long you stay. And just fly direct to Cuba from Toronto, no problems with customs when I brought cigars back.

My understanding is that the actual law on US prohibiting cigars has to do with using US currency to buy Cuban goods. Therefore, as a Canadian, buying Cuban goods with Canadian currency you would be OK, even if you bring them to US.

But, what the hell are you doing, going to Cuba in the first place, supporting a totalitarian communist regime?
