For the Mods & Admin - "Deleted" posts and threads
So a question for Joe and the moderator's team - and to perhaps generate some discussion amongst the members:
Why does this site allow members to edit their own posts, without limit?
It seems there are a handful of members who have, on a few occasions over the years, gone through their own posts and threads, and edited them so as to delete the content of those posts. Some members have pages and pages of blank posts to their names.
Do these people not stand behind what they post? And unless someone has quoted their original post somewhere in a thread, what's to stop them from completely editing what they've posted in order to change what they said, and completely ruin the subsequent debate.
Many forums enable options in the software that only allow you to edit your own posts for a period of time (minutes), or until a reply has been posted. After that, you're stuck with whatever you said.
Perhaps that would encourage some people to choose their words more carefully.

+1 The internet seems to encourage many people to behave through their posts in a manner that would not be acceptable in person. When things get a little hairy, they simply go and delete stuff and can say "What? I didn't say anything."Brewguy wrote:Many forums enable options in the software that only allow you to edit your own posts for a period of time (minutes), or until a reply has been posted. Accountability isn't a bad thing.
Being stupid around airplanes is a capital offence and nature is a hanging judge!

Sometimes people change their minds. Or post drunk. Or post something and then think "In hindsight, I really shouldn't have done that". Or make spelling errors and want to correct them later. From time to time we'll lock individual posts, but it's not very common. It's an idea though.
Re: For the Mods & Admin - "Deleted" posts and threads
I don't like the idea though...
The few times I deleted my own posts were because the person to whom it was addressed (and who started the topic) obviously didn't give a damn or when I realized I wrote to much stuff about my private life.
Like said, there is the quote function if someone really want to keep a track.
There is another aviation forum that offer the option of completely deleting a topic to the one who started it.
With the idea of "You started a thread, you own it" So you can delete it by yourself if it doesn't go the way you think it should have.

I like the idea of a 24 hour edit window. So if you drunk posted, you can discover what you posted the previous night and edit it.
On another forum, there was a field that let you give a discription of why you edited your post. Great for correcting spelling errors and other mistakes. It would work on here too, but you'd have to take the initiative and add add it to the main message body, something like "edited for spelling errors".

@#$! THAT!!!
I spew crap on here all the time drunk, sober, happy, sad, etc. I'd NEVER get a pilot job (or be able to keep one) if my identity was found out. I might as well put on my resume that I'm an alcoholic Communist union organizer! I'm not. I just like to have fun on my internets.
When I plan to do something serious in my life like look for a pilot job, run for public office or dodge the tax-man, I'll be pulling an I am Birddog faster than you can type DELETE!
If the rules change, I'm outta here. And I'd like a little notice before they do, please, mods.

Do drunk drivers get 24hour amnesty for their actions?
Why should you when it comes to posts on here. Take responsibility for your actions.
Posts on AvCanada being one of them.

Nark, I think it is because those that post drunk think they are being clever and witty, and dont realize that others consider them, well, to be nice, not so clever and witty. They are having fun boring other people. I dont think they see it like that. We wade through their posts to read the sensabile one.

That's my point.
You post something stupid, you look stupid, your persona looks stupid.

Sometimes new facts come to light that require an edit on the part of a poster.
Imagine flying an approach to have the conditions change, and not being allowed to do a missed approach?
