I've made parts for aircraft engines, so I know they're good.
I trust the picky mechanics that take care of my plane.
I can make an educated guess that the planes I fly have been over-engineered (ZLIN), or over-liabilitied (Seminole) into safety.
Who made my parachute? Who maintains it? Who packed it? Can I verify its exposure to UV light? What's the tensile strength (per strand) of the string that will be holding me? Is the plane dumping me airworthy? Is the pilot sober? What are the wind limitations of jumping? What are the odds of my back-up chute working when I'm freaking out?
Too many unanswered questions. I'm not jumping.
Answer the questions, then it sounds like fun!

Skydiving is a big industry in North America just check out http://www.dropzone.com , Di Vinci knew it was possible centuries ago. Now i own my gear and pack my chute and average about 80-100 skydives a year..not bad for a pilot? the only thing keeping me from doing more is the cost. ...oh ya i forgot .....chickens don't fly
don't knock it till you try it!

Warrant issued for former owner of Skydive Ranch

CBC News
CALGARY – An arrest warrant has been issued for the former owner of the Skydive Ranch, after he failed to show up to testify at a fatality inquiry Tuesday.
Jim Mercier was scheduled to appear at the inquiry into the death of 18-year-old Nadia Kanji, who was killed seven years ago when her parachute failed to open during a jump at the Beiseker ranch.
His lawyer Robert Burgener said he didn't know where his client was, or why he didn't appear.
Kanji's parents, who have called for tougher regulations for the industry, said they weren't suprised Mercier didn't show up.
"What does Mercier have to hide?" Nury Kanji said.
Kanji died on her first-ever jump in July 1998, when her parachute didn't open properly. A witness said part of her main chute didn't open and then cut away about 61 metres from the ground. The reserve chute partially opened, that witness said, before collapsing.
Moments earlier, her friend Narisha Jindani also had trouble with her parachute, suffering multiple fractures and spending two months in the intensive-care unit.
Jindani testified that they weren't given instructions on what to do should the parachute not open properly, although an instructor said students are informed of potential malfunctions.
The inquiry also heard that the ranch used students to pack parachutes.
There have been five deaths at the Skydive Ranch in the past 15 years.
Burgener also said Tuesday he is withdrawing from the proceedings.
"The requirement in time, in order to attend and do a proper job, a professional job, requires a budget and the budget requires other experts, the budget requires time and time is money," he said. "And unfortunately there's no provision in the Fatalities Inquiries Act for a budget.
"As a result, I can't attend."
He said with his withdrawal, the fairness of the inquiry is called into question because Mercier's side may not be heard.
The inquiry proceeded Tuesday with testimony from a parachute expert, who testified there was evidence of a possible attempt to cover up information about the age of the parachute, as well as the maintenance record and handling of the parachute Kanji used.
With a safety record like the above, I'll take my chances in an aeroplane, thanks. At least there's TC to regulate us...

It's not as bad as you think. I've done 6 jumps, and one of those was times was when I packed my own parachute. (I was quite neverous at the time I realized it). I had no problems at all. That being said, I don't feel the need to go do it now that I have done it, but if the offer presented itself......I'd think about it. I'm glad I have tried it and don't regret it one bit, it's quite the rush! and it gets easier with every jump.

Jumperdumper I know you're excited about your little job, i built my time chucking meat bombs and was a chief pilot at a drop zone, you above all should know it is not for everybody. I did my 1+ jump, and personally i like the spinny thing on the front of the plane.
