An overheating cabin light forced an American Eagle Airlines plane to land unexpectedly in Toronto Friday morning after a flight attendant reported an electrical smell in the cabin.
Flight 4349 took off from Montreal for Chicago at 8 a.m. with 52 people on board. It landed safely at Pearson International Airport at 9:04 a.m., about 15 minutes after the pilot radioed in the problem,
No one was injured and all 49 passengers have been booked on other flights to Chicago.
American Eagle spokesperson Ed Martelle said the pilots were forced to land as quickly as possible due to "standard procedure."
After the plane landed and the passengers exited, mechanics identified the issue when they turned off the cabin lights and the smell went away, Martelle said.
Maintenance crews have discovered that a cabin light caused the smell that forced the Embraer 145 to land in Toronto.
Martelle added that the plane must now be inspected and repaired before it can be put back into service. He said expects that to take place sometime later on Friday.
