GPS Approach
This may be a dumb questions, so please be gentle.
GNSS based approaches are charted as "RNAV (GPS) RWY XX" or "RNAV (GNSS) RWY XX" this means GNSS must be used for guidance. My question is what is the difference between the GPS and GNSS?

Re: GPS Approach
A quick look in CAP 4 doesn't show any charted as GPS; but GPS is the American satellite system; GNSS is a generic name to include systems like Galileo, GLONASS etc.
I have no idea if there are any certified receivers that use GLONASS, and Galileo isn't operational yet, but I think the idea is to be inclusive and generic earlier rather than later.

DId you hear the one about the jurisprudence fetishist? He got off on a technicality.

There is no difference. It is an ICAO annex 4 requirement for depiction RNAV(GNSS) RWY XXX

GLONASS is not certified for aviation use. New dual frequency GPS satellites being sent up will be fully interoperable with Galileo when it is operational, and should provide uninterupted coverage planetwide with WAAS level accuracy to dual frequency capable recievers.

Re: GPS Approach
A few years back all the CAP procedures that had the acronym GPS had it changed to GNSS because GPS is a type of GNSS.

Oh I don't know. I've never bought a GPS except for my car, but as with all technology I think it is becoming extremely common and therefore cheaper. The airlines won't be happy though because it means equipping with more than just new recievers. They won't have a choice though because the FAA is counting on the capabilities of the dual frequency/WAAS equipment for ADS-B and air traffic management by 2020.photofly wrote:New dual frequency GPS satellites being sent up will be fully interoperable with Galileo when it is operational, and should provide uninterupted coverage planetwide with WAAS level accuracy to dual frequency capable recievers.I very much look forward to not being able to afford one!
