St. Andrews - Ottawa Advice
I'll be starting my CPL at CYAV Harv's at the end of this month. I was thinking of doing a trip to Ottawa for time building once I get into it. Any advice from those who have done something similar? Good places to clear customs on both sides, which airports to avoid and which are good, things to see, etc.
Thanks all.
Thanks all.

Customs is not required for inter-provincial travel.

I'd do YAV to Duluth to US Sault Ste Marie to Ottawa.
Clear customs in DLH and YOW. Come back domestically... Maybe Sudbury to somewhere on the north shore of superior to Sioux Lookout to YAV. Bring resumes, take advantage of the tour. Stay off the open lake, follow the transcan highway. Make sure you have a back door/ escape route.
Have fun.

Did my commercial back at the Winnipeg Flying Club back in the early 80's. I think Harv's is in the old building now . My time building trip took me the other way, I went west. I went alone and I'll have to admit, 3/4 of the way I was scared shitless because I think my planning was not 100%. So make sure you take your time and think of everything. Fly a route that will give you a way out if the weather craps out. And most of all enjoy yourself you will never forget your first trip. Have fun DHC.

Late reply but one good pointer is to plan to go to the Ottawa Flying Club at the North Field part of Ottawa. The FBOs aren't too general aviation friendly (ie: $$!). Both ding you for ramp fees and only one has avgas but they don't waive the ramp even if you take fuel. The flying club will not hit your wallet as hard.cienki wrote:I'll be starting my CPL at CYAV Harv's at the end of this month. In the case of clearing customs if you need to, the CFS says you need to go to either Shell or Esso but the trick to that is you ask ATC for a place to hold on the taxiway while you call CANPASS. If customs clears you over the phone then you simply taxi to the North Field. If they decide that they want to come see you, then you taxi to one of the FBO's and you will have to pay their ramp fee.
Hope this helps you save a few bucks!!
