Bidding for transfer out of your FIR

Post by Rodriguez Mountinous »

I was wondering if someone could give me some information on the process and what is involved when the opportunity arises to bid out of your current tower. I assume that there would be a minimum number of months/years that you have to work in your first tower before you can move, and when that point in time comes, are you able to move out of your region (ie. from Edmonton FIR to Vancouver FIR)? Does Nav Canada frown upon this, if it is allowed?

Thanks!

It's not frowned upon in any way. After two years of qualification you may bid to another unit of the same or higher grade. The bids usually come out once per year, but there are extra bids from time to time. There is no longer any restriction of regions (east-west). It's all seniority-based so you must be near the top of seniority. Some places are in high demand (YVR) so you may not get in for a bit. Other places like ZBB or YNJ might be quicker to get to.

I would have to correct you a bit. It may not be frowned upon, but hold no illusions. Navcan has no desire to see anyone move. The cost of moving you once you have qualified is enormous and is of no benefit to the company (in their eyes). Remember this is a right that exists in your collective agreement, earned through collective bargaining (that the Federal government seems to want to remove from everyone), not a perk that the company is happy to offer up.

You can also "transfer down" to a lower level operating position. You can only do this once in your career, and only after 8 years of operational service. Once you have transfered down, you can transfer back up to a higher position or laterally to the same level if you wish.
