Cleared for the ILS Via...

Post by BEFAN5 »

I know for vectoring you (atc) need to give us a max 30 degree intercept onto the loc, or what have you. Lately, I have been hearing a lot of AC guys in the Winnipeg area request direct DUNEX (the GNSS fix a few miles out for ILS 36).

When an aircraft requests this, do they need to meet certain equipment requirements? If they are coming into Winnipeg from Vancouver, they are at a 90 degree angle to the runway. I know their fancy airbus's can figure out where to turn, so they don't blow through the loc making a 90degree turn, but can anyone request direct this intersection for the ILS and be "cleared straight in ILS runway 36 via DUNEX"?

Plenty of low controllers who can answer with more specifics... but as a high-enroute guy, I'd venture a guess you'd have to be RNAV equipped.

If you ask for direct FIXAA I assume you have the equipment to get there. I don't ask or police it. I would in all likely hood clear you for the straight in approach via that fix if it is on the approach plates. I might ask if you would like a turn to final if it's much more than 90 degrees for you but other than that you're on your own. BTW, if you want a turn to final in any case just ask, it's no biggie for us.

That's been my experience. Heading to Sarnia from Toronto I'll either ask for GOVAD or it's offered. It's at about 90 degrees from the runway. And half the time I'll be asked "Are you able to navigate from there onto final?". Sometimes I say yes, sometimes no. ATC is always happy to oblige.
