A plane made an unexpected landing near the Pinawa Golf Club this morning, prompting emergency personnel to rush to locate the aircraft.

A 56-year-old Winnipegger flying the Cessna 206 float plane tried to land on water in a channel off the Winnipeg River system near Pinawa, but landed in bush near the golf course instead, police said.

Gordon Hunter was out in his boat fishing on Margaret Lake when he saw the plane, a Cessna 206 float plane, coast past.

"It seemed like the engines stopped. I didn’t hear the engines anymore," Hunter told the Winnipeg Free Press. "It banked to make a turn, and then it came down as if it was going to make a landing in one of the lakes around here."

Hunter then heard a loud crash and went to look for the plane in his boat. When he couldn’t find it, he returned to his cottage and called 911 from his cellphone.

Hunter said he's acquainted with the pilot, whose his first name is Willis and who has a cottage in Whiteshell Provincial Park.

The pilot walked into the Pinawa Club Restaurant at around 11 a.m., server Bianca Pengelly said.

"He didn’t look hurt at all," Pengelly said, but added that "he looked a bit shook up and wanted to get a hold of his wife really badly."

The pilot made some phone calls at the restaurant, then left when fire crews arrived to attend to the plane
