Avionics Apprentice
Hello, Since no one answered my post in the "Salary" forum for this question I am going to ask it here. I am looking to find out what a 0 - 2 year Avionics Apprentice are making these days? It has been a long time since I was one or worked with one. They can be right out of school with no experience to having some hands on experience with test equipment and troubleshooting. Southwestern Ontario region is the area I am looking in. I may be looking to hire 1 or 2 in the near future and would like to start wage budgeting. Thanks to all who add comments.
If you are one and are looking for work PM me.

Well, from the Caw handbook for jazz. A zero time apprentice make $15.26/hr
And from my experience in Calgary $15 was the start for a zero time apprentice. My recommendation would be in the $11-13 range for Ontario, As I know the western provinces always pay higher. But you also may need to factor in living expenses. Might be easier find the right person if the wage is more competitive. Hope this help.

$11 to $13 !!!!!!
You would offer some young man or woman about to start their career in Avionics $11 per hr?
I'd be ashamed to even relate those numbers to my name,

Re: Avionics Apprentice
I would say between $16-21/hr depending on the operation, even in S.Ontario. Baggage handlers make $11-13/hr. A guy or girl who went to school to get into a career that still has a fair bit of responsibility deserves more than $11/hr. We keep complaining we don't get paid enough but still $11 - $13 to start seems fair to a lot of people.

So to all the kids starting school next week, when you graduate in two years, all those hours of studying, no social life and ramen noodle suppers, look what youll be offered. 25 cents an hour less than if you just walked off the street and applied at McDonald's.madcapmagition wrote:My recommendation would be in the $11-13 range for Ontario

Re: Avionics Apprentice
That McDonalds rate has more to do with the minimum wage than reality. I'm not suggesting that an Avionics newbie should make similar money, more that a McDonalds burger flipper shouldn't be making that much.
However, the Avionics newbie has a chance for enormous increases over his/her career than the McDonald's employee and having burger joint experience isn't going to help that situation.

I really hope to meet you some day in a capacity of determining what you will get paid.madcapmagition wrote:Well, from the Caw handbook for jazz. A zero time apprentice make $15.26/hr

How can you recommend for them to get paid so poorly? Or are you just an asshole? If Jazz is willing to pay them why shouldn't everyone else? I own my an AMO and I pay my starting apprentice's about what they would make at Jazz to be competitive and maybe even get one of the good ones.
Re: Avionics Apprentice
So, in your infinite wisdom, you have determined that a newbie in avionics should be worth more than someone at Macdonalds. Can you realy justify that?CID wrote:That McDonalds rate has more to do with the minimum wage than reality. BTW I just had to deal with a Cessna 182 that had your companies float installation.

Re: Avionics Apprentice
In response to all those that feel that 11-13 is low,
It was a recommendation for a STARTING ZERO TIME apprentice, and is only a suggestion. IF you feel that is too low fine. We all have different opinions of fair. Given that the cost of living is no where near as high as Alberta for the most part, and the fact I was just giving a suggestion doesn't mean that it has to be followed.
And Idle threats online don't bother me in the least. If you want to meet me then come to Calgary and wait outside the aircanada building. I'm the asshole who deals with retarded avionics line guys all day who should be fired for being so incompetent. A low wage is the beginning that you accept for experience in a new career There's these things called a raise, which you get for showing your willing to work, and have a head on your shoulders to do a good and safe job.

twotter, my wisdom may not be infinite but I do know my comments on this topic were pretty benign. Only a shit disturber like you could make it a bone of contention.
Regardless, your comments show that you still haven't mastered the art of reading but you are still a master at the strawman argument.
Cheers.

Re: Avionics Apprentice
Well I am an apprentice and going to get my license around christmas. Logbook is ok and I only need to write CARS exam. I make a more than decent pay now. I hope that if you are going to offer 11-13$/hr you don't expect the guy to not turn his back on you at the first occasion.
Re: Avionics Apprentice
Thanks everyone for your input. $11 it is!!!!!!!
I had the $15- $17 in mind I was just hoping not too much more than that.
Thanks again everyone!

Re: Avionics Apprentice
I work at a shop in SWO. We start them anywhere from 15-18 with schooling. "Untrained" installers at 13-16 to start. I caution you on putting training into an employee from toronto as they just want to get back to AC in YYZ. I see it here all the time. Hire locally you will be much better off, for apprentices anyway.
Cheers and Good Luck.
