A PSA Airlines Canadair CRJ-200 on behalf of US Airways, registration N245PS performing flight JIA-2477/US-2477 from Charlotte,NC to Mobile,AL (USA), was en-route at FL300 about 75nm northeast of Montgomery,AL when following un-commanded aircraft oscillations and a flight level deviation the crew observed an un-commanded movement of the left hand flaps between 0 and 5 degrees with the primary flap indicators showing the flaps at 0 degrees throughout the encounter with a degraded flaps message. The flaps eventually returned to the retracted position, nonetheless the crew decided to divert to Montgomery performing a rapid descent (close to 3000 fpm) and landed safely in Montgomery about 15 minutes later.

Good decison and execution by the crew, poor reporting skills by the media. "Nearly 3000 FPM" is not a rapid decent in an RJ or most jets for that matter.
