Women allowed to vote....kind of.....guess where?

Post by winds_in_flight_wtf »

http://www.cnn.com/2011/09/25/world/mea ... topstories
-- Women in Saudi Arabia will be allowed to vote and run for office in future municipal elections, King Abdullah announced Sunday.
In an address on Saudi state TV, the king said women will be allowed to nominate candidates for the next set of municipal elections. Although he did not use the word "vote," allowing women to take part in the nomination process would amount to voting within Saudi Arabia's system.
The country is holding municipal elections Thursday for the only the second time in nearly 50 years. The changes the king announced would go into effect for the next set of elections -- and it is unclear when those might take place.
Saudi women's rights activist Wajeha Al-Huwaider called the announcement "great news."

Right on schedule with the civilized world.

For a society that you claim is stuck in the middle ages, I would say that giving women suffrage only 90 years after we decided they were to be considered PEOPLE is pretty good.

crunch crunch crunch

Obviously your opinion. Yeah an entire generation behind is just amazing. If you actually decided to put your bag of cheetos down and read the article, you would understand that the procedure may be revised as needed. Something tells me it will not be a welcome change among many people.

Once you're done reading that article, pack your bags and emigrate to Saudi Arabia. You can pioneer the rest almighty one.

No I think they are only caught up with the "civilized world" we have here when men can marry men. Everyone else are barbarians.

The most difficult thing about flying is knowing when to say no.

After over a half a century of flying I can not remember even one trip that I refused to do that resulted in someone getting killed because of my decision not to fly.

Me? Sarcastic? Heavens no! I do believe that the best gauge of human civilization that the world should be measured against is the current but fast changing North American standard.

And if anyone thinks that Sharia law prevents any of the above from happening--in spirit if not in fact--they should have their heads examined. You cannot force people to be moral, only try to convince them to do so.

AIDS in SubSaharan Africa: Swaziland 26.1%, Muslim population = 0.2%
Botswana 23.9%, Muslim population = 0.4%
Lesotho 23.2%, Muslim population = 0.1% etc etc

Somalia .02%, Muslim population = 99%
Mauritania .8%, Muslim population = 99%
Niger .8%, Muslim population = 98%

And in the middle Nigeria, 51% Muslim, AIDS rate is 3.1%. this inverse proportionality of AIDS rate to Islamic population stays true across the entire region of SUb Saharan Africa (Predominantly Muslim North Africa has an even lower AIDS rate).
So you cant say an Islamic society does not prevent any of the above from happening when it has saved the entire Muslim population of Africa from the most lethal plague that is ravaging the rest of the continent.

This report suggests just the opposite that AIDS in fact is growing at a rapid rate in Muslim countries. Because of the religious stigma much of it is going unreported.

The reality of any religion keeping people safe from AIDS is a stretch at best. The crazy Christians, especially the Catholics have certainly not helped with their ban on condoms.

Yes, you wouldn't imagine in a society that carries the death penalty for adultery and fornication that there would be too many people admitting they had sexual relations with anyone other than their spouse.

That article was from a reporter and is dated from 2005. The numbers of AIDS in Africa I posted are current and is a much better indicator of actual AIDS rates than a near decade old article. The fact is, as much as you dont like to admit it, that following Sharia law has a clear cut benefit in exacty the situation mentioned as an example.

Sharia Law came from the insecure men that originally designed/wrote the Muslim religion. According to the Iranian leaders there are no gay Muslims in Iran so how could they have AIDS. I'd be very suspect of any report that came from Muslim countries.
Lets set AIDS aside for a moment and talk about Sharia Law...are you for it? Do you think it benefits both men and women?

So you have beter information than the CIA and WHO? And youre a religious scholar as well, in the field of Islam no less. Pretty impressive. Or maybe you just pick and choose what you want to believe and run with that?
