It's a good cause and I don't want to see any museums close but I have to ask, what will they be doing differently to stay open this time? Before anyone goes and attacks me, let me say I think heritage is important and I have been heavily involved with a couple of museums both public and private. I only pose the question because I think sustainability (in everything) is important and I don't want to see this exact situation come up again six or eight months from now.

Oh yeah, of course I signed the petition.

At this point , the Museum is not being given a chance to do things differently.
They have been given 6 months to vacate the building.
The point I have made in other posts is that the Museum has been struggling for a number of years and has not really done anything significant to improve the situation so what did they expect.
The reality is that the Museum barely generates enough income to stay afloat and has almost closed a few times over the years. Another one of the big problems is the the internal issues with the aboard/admin. of the Museum, too much infighting , firings , control issues etc. This hurts the museum and it's reputaion immensely and has an adverse effect on support, funding etc.
While the building is historically important, it is in terrible shape and is very difficult to maintain, heat etc.
(It needs to be restored itself and neither the Museum or the owners can afford to do this) The CWH Museum went thru the same issues back when they were in the old BCATP hangers. While they were historcal BCATP buildings , it just was not realistic to try to maintain and heat them. Put into perspective, the BCATP hangers were smaller than the DeHavilland building and CWH who generated more monthly income than the Downsview Museum could not afford them.
Another issue is the artifacts themselves. There are many very important items that need to be preserved properly to professional Museum standards and I don't think the Downsview Group have qualified staff to do this. That in it self is a negative and puts the artifacts at increased risk of deterioration.
I am not trying be negative but there are many issues at hand here and not all are being looked at.
So it will be up to the Gov. or some wealthy individual to rectify this latest issue the Museum is dealing with.
However, in reality , unless the Museum finds a way to increase their revenue etc things will only get worse ( as we have already seen)
I wish them luck and hope for a miracle
