5 essential songs
It occured to me today that I've been listening to the same music now for years. I haven't heard anything new in a while that I've really liked. So here's the idea:
Pick an artist you really like but that maybe isn't so much in the mainstream. Give me 5 songs which you think would make someone like this artist. Try to choose songs maybe from several different albums. Artists all evolve and change and this will help get a good idea of what to expect of the artist's entire body of work.
I'm hoping a few of you will turn me onto something worthwhile. As for genres, just go with what you like. My tastes sort of run the gamut, I listen to a bit of everything. Not into Top 40 or pop or country, or else I'd probably have no trouble finding new music I like on the radio.
If anything, it'll be one of those fun message board games...
Anyway, I can start:
Blind Melon (yes...the band with the Bee Girl video...they had way better stuff than that...)
<object width="420" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/GbqJ-EwezTo?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/GbqJ-EwezTo?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
2. The Pusher (Nico)
3. Harmful Belly (For My Friends)
4. St. Andrew's Fall (Soup)
5. Sleepyhouse (Blind Melon)

Still love the oldies!
The more I look, the more classics and classic covers I find.
Santana's latest (Guitar Heaven) is pretty damned good.
Love this concert (and this much underappreciated tune):

Sorry cptn2016, I didn't mean to 7500 your thread. I gotta RTFQ before posting, thought I saw one song from 5 different artists.
Re: 5 essential songs
Yeah, I can't figure out how to embed videos either...I followed the instructions on youtube and used the 'youtube' button here, but it hasn't worked. I checked the FAQ here as well, no luck. See my original edited post and you'll see how it ends up looking.
I like the Knopfler song, good stuff, and the Jimmy Page vid was great too. Siddley, no worries, I'm just looking for new music, the rules weren't meant to be strict, it was just a way to get people to give me a well-rounded idea of what a band sounds like. Sort of like if someone who had never heard Led Zeppelin before, you'd have to play Stairway to Heaven, Whole Lotta Love, D'yer Mak'er, etc...but they don't necessarily have to be hits.

Re: 5 essential songs
Hey cptn, here's how I embed from YouTube.
Find the vid you want and begin to play it. Left click on the web address in the upper left corner - it'll turn blue - then press Ctrl "C' to copy the web address. Don't screw around with the embed feature on the right of the You Tube page. That used to work, but I have no idea what happened, it no longer does. In the reply box on AvCan, click on the youtube box, when that appears in the reply box, simply press Ctrl "V" to paste the You Tube vid link between the brackets. That's what works for me, there may be other ways.

WTF!!! I just tried to embed the studio version of Travellin using the above method and it didn't work, but worked for the live version???

There's extra code at the end of the address when you click on "suggestions" what you'll see at the end of the address is "&feature=related" just delete that from the address and it should embed.

Genesis. Not the greatest hits. Not the Soft Rock Radio version of Phil Collins. The hard, edgy, and experimental prog-rock band they are supposed to be.
Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

For something a little newer, Arcade Fire.
From their first album and performed live with David Bowie (another often watered-down-by-radio artist).
From their latest album The Suburbs. This is an album I can really make a connection to because the whole thing is about growing up in the 90s in slowly decaying 1970s suburban sprawl.

Pie here's a couple more indie groups from Montreal. Haven't heard much from Stars lately, but the United Steelworkers are pretty active.

Anyways, moving along with the theme: Canadians make excellent music, I submit the following lady.
Again another cover for your enjoyment, that of another excellent Canadian artist.

I'm closer to a pharisee. I knew I loved the other four. The songs by those guys I don't like are a small percentage of their catalog.Shiny Side Up wrote:Philistine.Beefitarian wrote:Do you mean 1? Re: 5 essential songs
Ah, you should have specified. Your previous remark indicated that you didn't like any of them, in which case I would not talk to you ever again. You are forgiven.Beefitarian wrote: I'm closer to a pharisee. I knew I loved the other four. The songs by those guys I don't like are a small percentage of their catalog.
I posted them mainly because a lot of people don't realise that Rush has anything out side of their standard classic rock radio fare, and they couldn't be more wrong, so I posted some of their more recent offerings. One of the most consistent bands out there for quality in my opinion. Whether one likes their songs or not, respect must be given to probably the three most talented people on their respective instruments.
Speaking of three piece bands with a lot of longevity, these guys deserve another listen with some of their early and later fare which has largely escaped the limelight. While I love their eighties, MTV-friendly stuff, its some of their lesser known offerings which are truly unique. Eric Clapton once remarked that this guy was the best guitar player he'd ever heard. Its time to pull out the BFG.
My personal favorite, make sure you listen until the shift change at 2:10.
Also notably they might also be one of the best live acts to see.
They always had a good formula for making videos.
