Flying Wild Alaska

Post by wan2fly99 »

Second season started yesterday on TV Well now I have 3 shows to watch Buffalo, Alaska and the Aviators.

Made me think at what those pilots fly in Winds of 50 knots and I don't want to go if I see the wind at 20 knots.

Made me have good respect for those guys and gals up there.
Kind of feel like not flying now seeing what they can handle

Defiantly a great show. I'd probably say I enjoy watching it more than Ice Pilots. Ariel is alot easier on the eyes than Mikey too.

I prefer it to ice pilots as well, little less drama although it is windy there some, of the reporting and actual winds are over done a bit. You don't land a light Cessna in a direct 40 knot cross wind. From eye balling it the stronger winds shown seem to be in the 20-25 knot range which is still pretty wicked.

I enjoy the show too although it is talking about crosswinds 80% of the time. Did anyone catch the glitch in the first episode when they described a "wing strike" two times in 30 seconds?

I think the drama is hammed up much worse than Ice Pilots... they make it sound like the pilots might die before every xwind landing... but you always have to wait for the commercial first.

That would be because you are absolutely correct, All the winds in this show are turned into mph to dumb it down for the standard american. In knots it is most certainly 25, maybe 30 at tops.

P.S-Ariel will be my next wife, you see this chick in her bikini last season. I DID!!

+ her dad seems to be a much nicer guy to work for than Mickey's dad ;) Just very unfortunate that they are not flying old DC-3s, 4s and Electras.

I have flown a Cessna 206 out of CYQL and CZPC in winds up to 40+ knots and it is no big deal.
Mind you, with winds that high, there never was much of a crosswind but I have been in 30 kts 70/80 degrees off and that is a bit much.
Video from the ground of the C207 landing, it is obvious there is a strong, strong wind. Biggest problem in the wind is turning around and taxxing downwind to the parking area, and of course, tying the airplane down. Every wind accident in Lethbrideg was when the airplane got flipped upside down turning around after landing.
One thing missing on the tiedown area are the 5 gallon pails of sand Canadians usually use for tiedowns. IMHO all those pails do is beat the shit out of the bottom of the wing when the airplane ends upside down. Real tiedowns are the ones used in Southern Alberta. 5 gallon pails filled with cement with a rebar hook in the cement on top, buried 5 feet into the sometimes frozen ground and a 3/4 inch wire rope cable strung between them.

The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

Stuff Happens up there

I have no doubt I walk a little taller after 1000+ hours in Alaska. I haven't seen any episodes past the first two. I'd rather watch Walking Dead, or Modern Family.

I had drinks with Pontz and Ariel at Oshkosh this year. Good people.

The perma frost probably limits wheather you bury those pails or not.

They might want to fill some 45 gallon drums with cement if this hits !

Yup the landing isn't the really nasty part, although you have to touch down with some crab on with winds above 20 knots because there is not enough rudder to holder her straight. No big deal on gravel but hard on the tires with paved runways. However the closest I came to wrecking an airplane was turning off the end of the runway after the landing in a howling crosswind from the wrong direction. She almost went over on me, but I was able to straighten out just in time. I ended up waiting for about ten minutes still on the runway until there was a momentary lull in the wind and I was able to make the turn. Fortunately there was nobody else wanting the runway as everyone else was too smart to fly that day. The things you do when you are young and dumb..........

Yeah I agree with this. I find Alaska much more over dramatized than Ice Pilots. And after every commercial they take 5 minutes to explain exactly what just happened before the break, it's so annoying!

Not too long ago, I landed a C-150 at an airport to the lee of the American rockies in a Sandstorm, Took 3 vehicles on the runway to hold her down, 11 guys came out to grap her when we landed and the windspeed registered 95 MPH in the partially blown down terminal building. My brother STILL wont talk about that trip with me LOL

When it gets that windy with a crosswind land on the taxiway. Arctic Airports used to send a letter a week to company, the boss laughed it off as he did it too

I had to bump this one back up...I really enjoyed tonights episode. I think most of us that started in the bush can relate to "Ben" and his trek back to base "in the shit". It was really a flight I remember making a few too many times. The young pilot did a great job in low ceilings and vis and kept his head. Im sure he knows that area pretty well, and the "drama" was of course a necessary ingredient for any successful show...but the flight just took me back and thought many could relate.

I hope Ariel gets her PPL with her new 150 lol.

Good show tonight, worth the watch.

Fly safe all.
