Crash @ North Spirit Lake Ont (4 dead, 1 survivor)
Sorry Doc, didnt last long this yr...
I just caught the story on CTV news. All 5 aboard the flight into North Spirit Lake Ont this morning were killed. I have no information on what type of aircraft or the company. I started my career in YRL flying into North Spirit at least 3 times a day. This is a tragic start to 2012.
I have done a google search and unable to come up with a link as of this moment. Im sure someone will post as soon as one is available. CTV interviewed an eye witness and he claims the wx was terrible since last night. No idea of any details.
My most sincere condolences to all the family and friends of those involved.
Please.... Fly safe all!
*Edit for link addition*
It was a Keystone PA31.

A Keystone Air Service plane carrying five people including a pilot has crashed into a lake in northern Ontario.
Peter Hildebrand of the Transportation Safety Board of Canada said the Piper PA 31, Flight 231, crashed into North Spirit Lake at about 10 a.m.
"It was flying from Winnipeg to North Spirit Lake and heading for the air strip at the small northern community there when they crashed on the lake," he said.
"We don’t know why at this point. Our investigators will be heading to the scene."
Hildebrand said the condition of those on board the plane is not yet known.
"We understand there was a fire to some extent in the aircraft after it struck the lake," he said.

Not a good start to 2012. All the best for the family and friends of the victims.
Looking at the WX for YRL and here in YXL it doesn't look like a great day for flying.
Fly safe.

Re: Crash @ North Spirit Lake Ont (5 dead)
my condolences//
1/ north spirit lake is VFR AIRPORT the wx is soild ifr ? where in the hell was ops control to allow dispatching in wx like that
this unfortunately is a classic 703 cfit accident with several of the dirty 11 in play.
and it pisses me off
2/ many companies have ops spec for reduced vfr however usually requires a detailed training program and 2 crew .
but gfa wx and even the wx channel for the public were calling for moderate to patchy severe mixed icing 2-500agl ceilings what the .... was someone thinking to allow a young 20-something pilot to dispatch or prevent self dispatch on a trip like this

Re: Crash @ North Spirit Lake Ont (5 dead)
I greet news like this with ANGER! I see RED! One of our birds missed at YPM this morning. North Spirit is about 40 miles from there. There is NO approach for North Spirit Lake. The sector altitude is 3000 feet (give or take) the ground is 1200 feet (give or take). You have to know these guys were NOT maintaing VFR all the way from Winnipeg, which makes the sector their MINIUM descent altitude! If TC had the balls to put this operator's OC in a blender after their last fiasco, these people would be alive today! What the F^*&(* is WRONG with this industry??
My thoughts are with the families of all involved...
Lets get this operation off the books! Or, do we need a few more?

No published approaches in the CAP or RCAP FISH-FLY. CKQ3 is strictly VFR.

Lack of even fair and proper oversight by the regulator for a start Doc.If TC had the balls to put this operator's OC in a blender after their last fiasco, these people would be alive today! What the F^*&(* is WRONG with this industry??
Been that way for a long time now, but cheer up SMS will fix it.

Cat, haven't you heard? Keystone is the poster child for SMS. I'm pretty sure they were the first 703 operator in Canada to 'embrace' SMS. I believe they also advertised that because of SMS they were the safest 703 operator in Canada.

Keystone Air spokesman George Riopka said while there is no weather station at North Spirit Lake, the forecast that day was deemed to be acceptable. "The pilots do do flight programming or pre-flight planning," he said. "They get what they call [graphical area] forecasts for the area, and the weather was acceptable to fly."

Re: Crash @ North Spirit Lake Ont (5 dead)
"Weather station"??? WTF? There are almost NO "weather stations" anywhere anymore. Where do they fly that HAS a "weather station"?? This is the kind of "knowledge" these folks hold down management positions with some of these "joke" airlines. Wonder what approach he thought the pilots would use in this "weather was acceptable to fly...." I don't think this guy is capable of wiping his ass.spartacus wrote:http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/thunder-b ... crash.html

So, running out of gas and pan caking it onto a street in Winnipeg resulting in a death, wouldn't count as a tragedy? Or, was that a "mulligan"?daedalusx wrote:TC only pulls AOC after tragedies... See Aeropro's BE10 crash.

Re: Crash @ North Spirit Lake Ont (5 dead)
Condolences to friends and family.
I know some of the Keystone pilots, if anyone knows who the pilot was I would appreciate a PM.
On another note, A friend based out that way told me the GA was forecasting freezing rain in the area.
