Minimum Crew Rest Requirements

Post by bstock »

I'm having a difficult time finding out exactly what the minimum crew rest is.

I have heard something like 10 hours of uninterrupted rest is required between reporting for duty?

With respect to 704/5 ops,

-What is the minimum rest period required between reporting for duty? Is this 10 hour number correct, or is it 6, or 8 hours? Or does it just need to respect the 14 hours within 24 hours requirement?

Thanks

700.16 (1) Subject to subsections (5) and (7), no air operator shall assign a flight crew member for flight duty time, and no flight crew member shall accept such an assignment, if the flight crew member's flight duty time will, as a result, exceed 14 consecutive hours in any 24 consecutive hours. Where the flight is conducted under Subpart 4 or 5 using an aircraft other than a helicopter, flight duty time shall include 15 minutes for post-flight duties.

So you have 24 hours in a day and you're only allowed to work 14 of them, there's your 10 hour rest period. This excludes any additional rest required if you do a split duty day or you do unforeseen operation circumstances. It also doesn't cover the 6, 30 day non-overlapping periods where you can do 15 hours on duty if you have the OPPS spec, comply with the standards, and sacrifice a live goat.

The short answer is 10 hours.

CARS part 1 subpart 1 in the interpretations define it as:

"minimum rest period" - means a period during which a flight crew member is free from all duties, is not interrupted by the air operator or private operator, and is provided with an opportunity to obtain not less than eight consecutive hours of sleep in suitable accommodation, time to travel to and from that accommodation and time for personal hygiene and meals; (période de repos minimale)

Really it depends from company to company from what I've seen. It all varies by what the company deems appropriate or is negotiated in a C.A. One company I worked for gave us 12 hours rest as minimum, another gave 11...there are some that give 10.

My company gives 12 hours between assignments "block to block", meaning 15 minutes after the chocks are in until the departure time on the next assignment. When away from base, this is shortened to 11 hours. For a certain base we can go as low as 10 hours. These rest times are all part of our collective agreement.

There is variability from one operator to the next, but my understanding is that the CARs stipulate 8 hours "prone rest", meaning enough time to get a suitable accommodation and sleep for 8 hours.

I'm at a 705 operator.

So, it looks like there are two different requirements. In my opinion you have to comply with whichever requirement is more restrictive.

So; 8 hours sleep, 30 min return travel time (assuming a small community or close hotel), 30 minute supper, 30 minute breakfast and 30 min for a shower and shave. there's your 10 hours. Now if the hotel is an hour from the airport each way, then you need 11.5 hours off, and so on. You can adjust the 30 minute numbers as required. Personally I think 30 minutes for supper is a bit thin, but you get the idea.
