died for aviation discovery

Post by snaproll20 »

There have been a lot of interesting polls recently, with lots of good input.
How about a list of people who died, sometimes innocently, discovering a new aspect of aviation we all now take for granted?

For example:
Otto Lilienthal (1896) (glider pioneer)
Geoffrey deHavilland (high speed research)
The B-17 crew returning from Italy to N. Africa who wound up mid-Sahara because of the (then) unknown jetstream.

The crew of the BAC 1-11 G-ASHG that entered a deep stall and crashed had big ones, made of brass. They kept transmitting how the aircraft was performing and what they were doing to break the stall untill the aircraft hit the ground.
