Sunwing fuel issue Feb 24, 2012

Post by MCB »

Heard about this on CP24 earlier today
http://www.cp24.com/servlet/an/local/CT ... b=CP24Home

Interesting footage. Not quite clear what their issue was onboard. My understanding is that they declared minimal fuel after diversion from Montreal, but the video had people assume more was worse.

Any other info?

Looks like it was filmed with a potato.

Terrible video footage; the journalism is even worse. Much idiocy abound on this channel.

Jeez... I could barely contain my laughter. This is atrocious journalism.

Honestly, the reason all these news channels have gotten so bad over the years is because of all the gullible idiots wanting constant action and entertainment. "Looks like the plane was on fire" definitely would make for some amazing news, but they use to need factual evidence. "Use to need" is the key word there, as nowadays, all the fat couch potatoes buy into this so easily, the news agencies could say whatever the hell they want. Geting information and evidence is a things of the past it seems.

This whole thing is starting to look really ridiculous now. Looks like someone in the newsroom wasted no time jumping to conclusions and sensationalizing (special?) with no facts. The Toronto Star posted a follow up this morning.

Sitting in my arm chair in front or my flat screen. It just looks like a build up of ice over the light lens on the wing. I used to fly an MU2 and we had tip tank lights on it. It was the best ice indicator ever on an aircraft as the metal cover that keeps the light forwad instead of all over kinda like the blinders that go on a horse. Keep the horse from seeing to the side.

IF and I say IF ( as I do not know for sure ) there was any ice on the lens cover for the light. It would look bright like that but only to the edge of the ice. So 1/2 of ice, 1/2 of light.

It is probably safe to guess with the weather last night that in the cloud for any length of time there would be SOME ICE out there. This was a suggestion not a diagnosis of what happened.
So for those who attack ... read it first... then ... your 2 cents are welcome.

Just an observation.

An official with the GTAA agreed the bright light was likely caused by a reflection. He told CP24 that the aircraft would not have been allowed to land close to a terminal if it was on fire.
Can someone clarify this for me? Is this stating that if an a/c had an engine fire that CYYZ or similar could turn them away?

I think what he probably said, and what Cp24 got wrong, was that they would have not allowed the aircraft to taxi to the terminal if it had indeed reported a fire when declaring.

Heard the 'Sunwing plane' was diverting to CYYZ as its alternate because of weather in Montreal ... the fuel issue was another aircraft inbound from Calgary (?). Very confusing.

wow..... Not anywhere near the drama reported by the media.

Aircraft made a precautionary diversion to YYZ whilst Enroute from YQR to VRA for a tech concern. Absolutely no fire! Returned to service later that day.

Not disagreeing with you at all, but the Star prints its own share of eroneous horse pooh info, at least a couple of stories an issue. Journos these days even have problems with spelling and grammar. (And don't give me any problems about mine ... skied 6 hours of powder, had half a bottle of wine, two ales, and two bourbons. So far. :drinkers: )

Not only seems the airplane to be on fire but, judging by the video footage, it also seems like Sunwing is operating aircraft without windows for passengers now!
Seriously, the picture quality is so bad it's hard to believe that people actually come up with any kind of assumptions. You could even argue that it's not even a sunwing aircraft.

If you get upset by reading and/or watching this CP24 news report, please don't even consider having a look at the user comments below on their website...
