An Amazing Discovery

Post by Moose47 »

What other treasures are buried out here just waiting to be (re)discovered?

Cheers...Chris

Sounds exciting but the article does not say for sure if they have found any or not. Start digging I suppose.

On more or less the same topic, buddy of mine goes to Germany about 12 years ago to buy a new BMW (used to be a good deal. Canadian government has sense screwed it up) on a fly and buy. Anyway, our hero is touring and drinking his way around Germany, gets wind (over beer) of a WWII airplane engine in this guy's father's barn. Buddy checks it out. He ended up paying 6K for THREE brand spanking new, still greased, engines for ME109's! Still in crates! Haven't talked to him in years....but he did NOT lose money on the deal!

G'day Doc

I know the feeling. I'm involved in a Halifax bomber recovery operation.

The writer of the article made a slight error on identifying the version of Spitfire. She has Spitfire II. The aircraft are actually Spitfire Mk. XI's (eleven).

Incidentally, the Spitfire Mk. VIII's in the black and white photo are from No. 607 'County of Durham' (F) Squadron. Looks like the photo was taken not too long after a monsoon. The squadron operated the Spitfire Mk. VIII from March 1944 to August 1945 in Burma and India.

Cheers...Chris

AvWeb is reporting that they indeed are "found" to the point of sending a camera down a. Ore hole to confirm. They say mark 14's in the AvWeb article, not that it really matters... They'll be worth millions o matter what mark they are.
