I think the desirability of working for a company has a lot to do with the point in the cycle that you can get in. Assuming the pay, schedule, lifestyle is all more or less the same (and in Canada they are pretty much all in the same ballpark), I'd pick the one where it looks like the fastest time to command. Getting hired at the tail end of a large boom is never good, just as getting hired at the start of a big one is almost always.

We all know which company to go with if salary is your only concern. That being said, I know a whole bunch of guys that are members of the red team, and neither one of them are thrilled with the working environment.

Also the whole pension thing seems to be very volatile these days. Maybe a defined contribution is the answer.
I know there is no sure thing but which is likely to be long term for a junior guy.

Alphaspeed I agree. I like the matched contributions idea. But I am not talking the usual 3 - 4%, rather something like Cathay with up to about 15%. You decide where the money is invested.

Is WestJet a defined contribution? Up to 20% or something like that?
Plus the options and profit shareing?

I am not a 100% sure but I belive at WJ the 20% goes into company stock and then the comany matches it. I have heard something about transfering it to RRSP's but I have no idea how that would work. Anyone from WJ care to enlighten us?

we can buy either stock or rrsp's with the 20%, and of course, we get the 2 fer 1 deal when the company matches 100% of that 20%. After maturing for a year you can sell the stock, and do whatever you want with it, it's your money, after all. Diversify away, if that's what you want.

How do you guys get around the Tax laws? If you are making 100K and putting 20% into an RRSP, that would equate to a 20K RRSP contribution which is above the max allowable as set out by Revenue Canada.

there are ways around the max limit. I, for one, have the option on my life insurance policy to add a specific amount as rrsp's. I hope to use that option someday... :p

Are you sure they have a max limit to "contributions" and not a max limit on tax refunds????
Pretty sure you can dump 100k into RRSPs even if you only make 20K a year.. Would seem illegal not allowing people to invest...

Every year the government sends out your max rrsp investment. I have never been able to max out at all.

that is a maximum tax deductible RRSP deduction. You can invest as much as you want in an RRSP it just won't all be tax deductible. Also you can carry it forward to use in later tax years.

Here ae some other ideas. First if you have kids you can invest in resp's with the same type of tax deduction as rrsp's, 1 resp per child, plus the gov't will match that at 20% up to $400. Next depending on your province if you invest in labour sponsored fund you can be eligible for up to 75% tax deduction on that. If you are a little more gutsy you can also invest in exploration companies and receive and tax free allowance for that investment and anything that you make you take abck out after a year without the capital gains tax. Lastly a final word of wisdom. If you can put more in your RRSP then do it. It may not give you the tax break that you are looking for now but will grow 100% tax free in the future.
Cheers, here's to the good life.[/quote]

I'd rather work for a company that is not going to lay me off every 5 years and I'd prefer it to be in cargo.
