Revolutionary jet engine has no moving parts
A Regina-based aerospace company is working on a new jet engine that has no moving parts.
Avro Aircraft will be testing its unique design using a jet called the Canadian Tebuan.
The Avro engine converts sound waves into energy.

"Converts sounds waves into energy" sigh ... media .. no comment
Sounds like a Ram Jet that works without forward velocity. Thats kind of cool.
Of course a Ram Jet makes most horrific noise you ever heard and consumes vaste quantities of fuel. Here is a live recording from WWII of a V1. My father described the sound as eery and ghostly... have a listen.

The pulsing sound is a flapper valve opening and closing so they are not strictly without moving parts. Presumably this Avro one has some other way to stop the expolsion from going forwards. Probably some wicked complicated airflow pattern or something ...

Re: Revolutionary jet engine has no moving parts
Actually cgrzo, a true ram jet does have no moving parts. It uses shock waves to compress the air which then prevents it from expanding forward after being mixed with fuel and ignited. Of course the big drawback was the requirement of a massive amount of forward speed to even start it. The pulse jet was a modification that allowed for lower starting and operating velocities.

Re: Revolutionary jet engine has no moving parts
The V1 wasn't strictly a ram-jet, it was a pulse jet as IFP mentions. While the V1 pulse jet was a valved design, there have been valveless pulse jets made. These truly do have no moving parts, and can produce static thrust (i.e. no forward velocity required) but are also very inefficient and noisy. They also have a very narrow range of operating thrust, making them more like a gas powered rocket.

G'day Fellow Wing Nuts
Bloody CBC (again!). It's Canadair NOT Canadian. The aircraft is a CL-41G-5 Tebuan which is really a beefed up CL-41 Tutor.
The Tebaun which is Malay for wasp, was built as a ground attack/training aircraft for the Royal Malaysian Air Force. They recieved 20 of the type from Canadair back in 1967. You see the odd one for sale in Trade-A-Plane now and then.
Cheers...Chris
