Attn: Ice Pilots fans...Arnie passed away:(
Just got this off Ice Pilots facebook page... My sincere condolences to Arnie`s family. I was hoping he would have got one more flight in his 180.

Ice Pilots NWT
We were very saddened to hear of the passing on May 4th of Buffalo Airways’ former chief pilot Arnie Schreder. Arnie was a key subject in our documentary series, Ice Pilots NWT and one of our viewers’ favourite pilots over three seasons of the show.
“Before we started shooting the series, Arnie was the first to warmly welcome us”, says series producer David Gullason. “He showed us around and invited me on a check-out ride for a new pilot on the C46. He was always warm, friendly and generous with everyone.”
Arnie trained hundreds of pilots at Buffalo over the years and took each one under his wing. He understood how scared they were going from flying small, single engine aircraft to giant warplanes. It was under his calm guidance that Buffalo turned out some of the best pilots in the business; many now fly for major airlines around the world.
Arnie retired in 2010 from Buffalo but returned to fly one last job, stunt flying a DC4 for a two-hour documentary that recreated World War Two’s daring dambusters raid. To no one’s surprise, Arnie was able to expertly bomb a specially built dam just as RAF aces did over 60 years ago.
We extend our deep condolences to Arnie’s spouse Janet, daughters Yvette and Kaitlyn and the rest of his family.

flyinthebug,
I was just about to post this very sad news as I had also just read it on their facebook page. This is a sad day in aviation as Arnie truly was one of the gentle giants of our industry and will be profoundly missed by the scores of pilots who have had the pleasure to fly under his tutelage or even crossed his path. RIP Arnie, gone but never forgotten.

Bumped to the top due to the magnitude of the man in question. R.I.P. Arnie, you sir were truly a helluva fine pilot and an even finer person.
Any one wishing to dedicate the rest of this thread to some good old fashioned bullshit about the man in question I'm certainly game.

I remember chatting with some people that had been in YZF much longer than me about all the experienced pilots still kicking around and the talent and abilities of those pilots. The funniest thing said was that Bruce Cornock was good enough he could fly a cardboard box but Arnie was so good he could teach you how to fly it!
RIP, only smooth flying from now on.

Canadian Aviation lost a good man.
all the best to th Schreder family

Re: Attn: Ice Pilots fans...Arnie passed away:(
Arnie was no actor. Arnie was a man doing his job, and like most non actors he was probably not all that comfortable at first with cameras around. I saw an interview where he mentioned how they have to glean almost a whole year of operations to come up with 10 or so hours of interesting stuff, and sometimes they still have to fill it up with "car washing etc"
What a pro, what a gentleman.

Arnie was a prince of a man first and formost, and as others have said "one hell of a pilot". Always willing to pass on his knowledge, and easy to learn from. We have lost a true legend of Canadian aviagtion, and a man who flew for the love of it. We are blessed to have flown with him, and I will cherish those memories. RIP Captain.................High Flight brother.

What a sad week. Mt GF and I watched every episode of Ice Pilots and I really feel in some small way that I knew Arnie. He just seemed so genuine and it really felt like he "let you in" if you know what I mean. I also lost a co-worker Glenn to a horrific car crash last week and just got home from his funeral.
I am also sad for the loss of MC-A Adam Yauch. Sometime people who touch our lives we meet face to face, sometimes they make us dance, and in Arnie's case they impact us through our TV's. Thanks to all 3 of you for the positive way you have impacted my life.

I never met him but after watching a few episodes of Ice Pilots he came across as a pretty decent guy. Condolances to his family, friends and (ex) fellow workers at Buffalo.

Blue skies forever, Arnie. I wish I knew as much about flying as that man had forgotten.

I hope the lads from 617 Squadron were in the lineup to meet him...............
Re: Attn: Ice Pilots fans...Arnie passed away:(
Really sad to hear the news.
I always watched the show to see Arnie and how good he was with people and how calm he was flying.
It would have been great to have a teacher like him to learn how to fly. Lucky people who did
Last time I saw him on the show saw him walk with the can and I realized it hit me that the end is near.
had cancer in the family and it is a dreaded decease. I hope his daughter has bitten her bout with it and will be a survivor
Arnie I pray for your soul and may you be happy flying in the heavens above

*Note*
I was just advised there will be a memorial service for Arnie at the Buffalo Airways hanger @ 1400 on Saturday May 12th in CYZF. It will be a ramp side service for all who knew Arnie... or those who didnt but just want to attend are also very welcome.
I hope to see many of you there!
GBNF Arnie. You were truly one of the best!
