Medevac is correct, Medivac is a variation of Medevac - and also correct.

Medivac as per Websters is a variation of the term Medevac.
To avoid the conflict in words, many Medevac Services call their flights Aero Medical
and disregard both Medevac and Medivac.
However if someone states Medevac, Medivac, Aero Medical - it is more than obvious.

Re: Medevac or Medivac?
Doesn't matter either way but they shud sh1t can the terminology - it's so badly abused if you need the lights and siren declare an emergency --- otherwise go with the flow -- that's just one medi/e/vac pilot's opinion

Re: Medevac or Medivac?
If you are NOT a MEDEVAC. PLEASE don't use the word on every transmission! It's an abuse of the term. If you are NOT a priority, you shouldn't ask for it! There should be fines and sanctions in place for abusers! ORNGE.......this means YOU!

Re: Medevac or Medivac?
Someone once told me that if medevac is used as part of your call sign, Nav Canada fees are waived as you are operating on humanitarian grounds.
Additionally, I see a lot of people on this board getting bent about using the call sign, even when the patient in the back may not be a priority, or the aircraft has completed the mission, and is returning to its base to be ready for the next mission.Whats the problem with that?
There have been times when ATC has called up and asked if we are priority - on occasion we are, but 7 times out of 10, we are not, and thus I say so, and we take the very slight delay or vector to accommodate traffic.
I'm up north - so usually not that big a deal - as most medevac patients should be stabilized enough to travel, that a few minutes here or there shouldn't be a problem.
Guess things are more challenging down south?
my 2 cents.

Re: Medevac or Medivac?
Medevac is a medical evacuation. The intent is to transport someone to a facility where they can receive care.
Medivac is a medical vacation. The intent is to get a free ride to the nearest city for a weekend of R and R by jamming a fish hook in your hand, getting flown out to town and then refusing treatment. The vacation ends when the patient returns to the airport to fly back to the reserve on a full fare travel warrant.

Re: Medevac or Medivac?
It really comes down to understanding the difference between speech and the written word. The term was likely first used in speech. When someone decided to write it down they discovered that "Medevac" didn't follow the rules of written English if you wanted it pronounced correctly. The better alternative would be "Med-Evac". That meets the spoken and written criteria.
Words tend to evolve over time and it was inevitable that someone would write "Medivac" being more familiar with the spoken term and not so much the etymology. Both terms can be used and the message will be received but the etymology is "Medical Evacuation".
Sort of like "aeroplane" and "airplane". Which is "correct"?

What an interesting debate. I'm just happy that I can watch "I Love Lucy" reruns.

Re: Medevac or Medivac?
On a related note, it's "Yaw Damper" and not "Yaw Dampener".

Re: Medevac or Medivac?
Then, would that be "shimmy damper", or "shimmy dampener"?
