Flyin' Tomorrow

Post by Learning2Fly »

If this beautiful weather holds up for tomorrow (looks promising), I'll be riding along in a Piper for a while.

Video camera is charged, and my sunglasses are shined up. I'm hoping to see Toronto from above, and maybe
a sweep over my neighbourhood.

Has anyone else been taking advantage of the great weekend sky?

Got Saturday off. Didn't go near an airport nor do anything remotely aviation related.... simply awesome!

Today, didn't want to go flying because of the high winds, but my passengers insisted on going. Had to run back home to change and shower after getting projectile vomited on.

Tomorrow, I will probably have to fly, but will try and pawn off as much as I can to those more eager for hours than I.

Not saying that I don't like flying, but ~100 hours in the last 30 is getting a little tiresome. Can't wait for snowboard season to start!

Don't mind these bitter old pilots, with their loose skin and old balls... gross. Enjoy the weather and have a great time!!!

flung it around the circuit for an hour or so on saturday morning before they closed the airspace. Followed a group of 7 Harvards in for landing :)

its been fantastic weather the past week or so. Got a good couple of circuit lessons in with no appreciable cross wind.

We certainly can't complain about the weather this year. Most weekends have been warm, and sunny, sans rain for the most part. Today is
picture perfect like yesterday; maybe a touch better with less wind.

It should be a good day for the airshow, and everyone else up there. Who knows, maybe I'll pass some of you at altitude. Look for the guy with the camera glued to his face. :P

Well, I hope you have a good time. It would be fun to get a picture of your house from the air. I like to see my house when I fly into my home base. I can see what my wife is up to.

We didn't end up flying over my house; we went north east from Oshawa to Lindsey, and then Peterborough.

It was a great time, on a beauty day. We met at my place, and drove up to CYOO where the plane is parked. It was cool to
see the complete walk-around, and pre-start checks. The winds were nearly non-existent, so he let me take control for part
of the flight to Lindsey.

I did better than expected, with a couple of rough areas (thermals) along the way. I was able to keep altitude within limits,
and follow the heading. He called out some turns, and headings for me to execute. At times the bank angle was a touch too
much, so I had to keep my eyes on the turn co-ordinator.

After Lindsey we flew over to Peterborough and did more touch-and-go exercises. I learned a bunch of new lingo like, "downwind",
"baseleg", etc. He allowed me to line up for approach, while descending, then he took control for the landing/go-around. It would
have been awesome to try a landing, but if anything happened to the aircraft my bank account wouldn't like it...so it was best we
didn't even go there. It'.s a bit more challenging to land without a radio altimeter.

On the way home I did the Taxi to the threshold, and flew the entire flight except final approach/landing!

Here are some photos, and cheap camera phone videos (boring stuff for most of you):

I have more videos of the pre-flight checks. If any new pilots want to see what happens during this time, let me know, and I'll
upload the links.

Fun. So now you know a bit more about how a side slip works to counter drift from the cross wind.

Yes, I think I'm near expert status after having sim, theory, and real world experience with "The Slip" :P

TheArcher II is a nice ride, with a good bit of power when needed. It was great to feel the difference between
a Cessna 150, and Piper. The Archer seemed to have more stability in flight, and slightly less runway to lift-off.

And the Archer still isn't all that powerful... Wait until you have a chance to fly in something with a constant speed, or better yet, a twin. My first flight stepping up from a 172 to a Seneca was a real riot - if you get a chance, you'll love it.

I'll be flying the Grob G120A pretty quick - first foray into an aerobatic airplane, I'm looking forward to it. Once you get comfortable with one type, there's always something new and exciting to keep your passion alive. That's the great thing about aviation!
