Westjet YYC
Was flying around Calgary near noon today. 16 was active, but they steered me way east so a Westjet flight could make an "emergency" landing on 28. Not sure what the emergency was whether medical or mechanical. Any word on what the problem was? Terminal's last transmission before switching them over to Tower was that 'crews were on the ground'
Re: Westjet YYC
How much you wanna bet it doesn't make the news since it's not Air Canada.

I got a CADORs report (not I don't have it readily to hand) that WJ had a medical emergency and had to declare for priority. That could be it.

Re: Westjet YYC
Heard WS had a "smoke in the cockpit" return to YYC yesterday too.
Re: Westjet YYC
if it was around noon, it would have been WS167 YYC-YEG. Smoke in the cabin.

What a surprise! I'm dumbfounded! Had a look in the "impartial" Calgary Herald and found no articles related to an emergency with a WestJet flight. How can this be?
The Calgary Horrible usually sugar-coats any WJ accomplishment though. Westjet farted! Smelled like Roses! Pictures on page 3.

The media are just as biased about Airlines, MP's, MLA's, and even movie stars as we are. Thats nothing new.
Back in the late 80's, the local paper in YHZ was very, very biased towards Air Nova. They had an engine fail taking off from YQY. Our local paper reported it, but used a picture of an Air Atlantic Dash 8!!!
Air Nova spent lots of money advertising with them....Air Atlantic did not.
A radio station in YHZ has a show each morning with a guy named Jodi Morgan....very very pro Harper and the PC's. He was for awhile on Harpers staff. You think he's objective?
I was involved with the media for many years. The idea that reporters and/or their respective media outlets are objective is absurd.
The stark reality is the Media don't bite the hand that feeds them. Thats why I'm not involved any more... by choice.

Knowing someone who works at one of these news agencies and who directly assigns stories, I can assure you that there is not bias towards or against any airline. They send out a reporter whenever they hear the fire and police being called into the airport for an aircraft emergency over the scanner, which doesn't specify the airline that aircraft is. No bias at all, just the mere randomness of sometimes hearing the call over the scanner and sometime not. After all, what do you seriously think the news agencies have to gain by showing bias towards/against a certain airline?

Most media seems to be either:
1) a propaganda tool in countries or governments where that sort of thing goes on; and/or
2) public entertainment, not unlike your 30 or 60 minute TV shows, but catering to a different need and often with more sinister motives.

A Westjet Boeing 737-700, registration C-FWBX performing flight WS-167 from Calgary,AB to Edmonton,AB (Canada) with 116 people on board, was climbing out of Calgary#s runway 16 when the purser detected a burning smell and haze in the mid cabin. The flight crew levelled off at about 8000 feet, declared emergency reporting smoke in the cockpit and returned to Calgary for a safe landing on runway 28 about 10 minutes later.
The Canadian TSB reported that maintenance identified a problem with the Live TV system, further troubleshooting is underway.

Re: Westjet YYC
Our major media outlets are controlled by a small handful of powerful people and carry significant bias.
A close relative of mine is an editor at a major daily newspaper in this country and tells me it wreaks of manipulation from the top - no longer journalism at all but reporting a defined line. He doesn't like it but is trapped by his pension and if you get too vocal you get punted.
