A photo of a few Harvard aircraft in flight.
This was from an old photo collection and I don't know where it was taken.
Looks like snow on the ground.

Would you have any information on the history of this aircraft.

G'day Beechy

First off, if you have any more gems like that, please post them.

The aircraft is a North American Aviation Harvard Mk. II. s/n 3079. It was taken on strength with the R.C.A.F. on the 6th of August 1941. During the war, it served with No. 14 Service Flying Training School at Aylmer, Ontario. It was involved in two accidents while with this school. Post-war, it was converted to a Mk. IIA (armed version with wing mounted .303 calibre machine guns, fitted to fire rockets or drop bombs) and served with No. 400 'City of Toronto' (F) Squadron at R.C.A.F. Station Downsview. It was struck off strength with the R.C.A.F. on the 11th of October, 1958 and then transferred to the Italian Air Force under Mutual Aid.

Cheers...Chris

Thankyou for the information about the Harvard photo.

The picture came from the same collection that the photo of the
Beech 18 in the hangar came from that I had posted in February.

They are from a friend whose Dad had taken them when he was in
the R.C.A.F. and has since passed away.

I've not had a chance to peruse this entire thread, and perhaps someone has already mentioned this, but let's not forget that many Canadian lads were seconded to the RAF.

My father enlisted at No. 5 Manning Depot, Lachine, Quebec, trained at Mont Joli and served in 578 Squadron, 4 Group, as a rear gunner in a Halifax.

Thanks for the comments on the picture of the Bristol Freighter that I posted last August. ejwalshe, I flew in that aircraft in July 1962 as an Air Cadet on the UK exchange trip, Perhaps your father may have been crew on that flight.

To continue on the nostalgia trip. As a kid in about 1958 I used to bicycle out to the Charlottetown Airport to play in a derelict PBY (two of them I think) that were later scrapped. Anyone here know which PBY's ended their days in Charlottetown? They were probably owned by MCA, but I don't know for sure.

Ventura Highway

Post by Moose47 »

G'day Chaps

I call this mishap 'Ventura Highway'.

The aircraft is a Lockheed-Vega Ventura G.R. Mk. V, s/n 2235 from the Operational Training Squadron at R.C.A.F. Station Pennfield Ridge, New Brunswick. The accident took place at 05:35 hours on the 22nd of June, 1945.

The crew were on their first night training flight. The lower fuselage near the belly gun position was damaged while over shooting a landing. The aircraft ploughed through soft ground and ended up on a highway at Pennfield Ridge. It sustained Category 'A' damage and was subsequently written off.

Cheers...Chris

Cessna Crane
The FJ-102 number identifies this as an aircraft that was assigned to the RAF most likely within Canada

G'day Beechy

I'll give you the bare minimum information for now. I'm typing with one good eye after having cataract surgery a few days ago. If you want further details, let me know and I will post them.

The aircraft is a Cessna Crane Mk. IA. It carries the original RAF serial number but was re-serialed as RCAF s/n 8753. The aircraft served exclusively with No. 12 Service Flying Training School at Brandon, Manitoba.

Cheers...Chris

Thank you for taking the time during your recovery to
post information about the Cessna Crane in the photo.

If you have other details about that aircraft they would
be nice to read about.

Here's a 1:48 scale version of a Crane that we recovered from a farm near Weyburn, Sask. It is now rebuilt and in the Western Development Museum in Moose Jaw.

G'day Beechy

The photo was taken sometime between late May 1958 and the end of September 1962.

CSR-123 Otter s/n 3673, is from No. 103 Rescue Unit based at R.C.A.F. Station Greenwood, Nova Scotia, It looks like it should be parked in between No.'s 3 and 4 Hangars. I flew out of No. 2 Hangar.

The two Expediters are s/n's 1507 and HB135 from R.C.A.F. Station Greenwood's Station Flight.

Cheers...Chris
