Call the type

Post by Colonel Sanders »

So, experts, what kind of aircraft is this?

It flew in for gas today:

I'd never seen one before - I had to look it up on
the registry - but I then again, I was home-schooled.

Nope, furthest thing it could be from a Beech.

Hint: Has an R-985. And no, it's not a modified DHC-2!

IFP calls it in 19 minutes!

I am humbled.

It's apparently known as the "French Beaver" which
inexplicably makes me want to run out and buy a razor.

BTW (a bit off topic) If you can get that kite registered in Canukistan, why is it so difficult to get an Antonov AN-2 up and flying?

It's not, as there are several AN-2s flying in Canada. The kicker is that this and the AN-2 never had a civilian Type Certificate issued or recognized in Canada, so they can't be used commercially and have several restrictions on their operation.

They operate under a Special Certificate of Airworthiness, as provided under CAR 507.03.

What kind? AWESOME!!! That's what kind. Colonel you gotta get one so we can all go for rides at OSH next year. Provided of course "I'm entitled to my entitlements."

Tell me you are at least trying to weasel a flight in it for a report.

It's a cheap French imitation of a famous Canadian airplane. :)

When I first saw it - at a distance - I thought,

"Who the hell put a Beech 18 tail on the back of a Beaver?!"

Sounded marvellous arriving though - it
was either a 985 or 1340 - not a 'chang.

That was my immediate thought as well! Word for word.
PS...that would have been my official guess too :?

My first guess was a Murphy Moose that had some of the builder's "artistic expression" applied. Fuselage looks too square to be a beaver.

Beaver fuselages are pretty square.
I too thought it was some sort of bastardized moose.

It looks like its grandparents were a Beaver, a Wilga, a Cessna 195, and a twin beech. And then it was born at the Helio factory.

For those of you who understand French:
http://mh-1521.fr/

That wonderful plane was built essentially for the military, only a few ones were built for civilian, and I think they built less than 400 in the fifties, so it's hard to find one today outside of Europe. I think there are only 3 of them in Canada, one modified with floats.
The Broussard is a good plane, a real taildragger, a good STOL and strong aircraft (the name Broussard comes from "brousse" which means bush); used a lot by the French army in Africa for reconnaissance, gunship, air supply, ambulance, and also for ag flying. His civilan life was mainly in skydiving centers in France (the neighbours didn't like that beautiful sound...).
It has been replaced with the Pilatus Turbo Porter by both militaries and civilians.
It's really a good plane, with the tailwheel at the right place!

I bet it flys nice or pretty nasty. I doubt something that looks like that would be in the middle.
