Good information on Dreamliner problems

The Dreamliner’s electrical system generates nearly 1.5 megawatts, enough to power several hundred homes.

Over the past few decades there has been a trend towards “more electric aircraft” or MEAs as they’re known. Airplanes including the Airbus A380 and Lockheed’s F-35 Joint Strike Fighter both fall into the MEA category, using electricity to power more systems than previous aircraft. Carrying the moniker of the most electric airliner, the 787 relies almost entirely on electricity to power the systems on board the airplane instead of hydraulics or pneumatics.

Even cars are going that way. My RAV4 has electric power steering. The reason is that the extra load on the alternator uses less fuel than the load of a hydraulic pump. It feels different, however. Disconnected and I can feel it pulse when my windshield wipers are on!!!

Come to think of it, the human body is a hybrid of hydraulic systems and electrical systems and I've always found I like the feel of the hydraulic bits!

I don't why but the Q400 comes to mind. A Japanese Q400. Why? Why does ANA and Q400 and grounding A/C come to mind?

But I digress.

Back on topic.

First there were lead acid batteries. Then there were Nickel Cadmium batteries. Then there was a problem. Thermal runaway they called it. So they installed temperature sensors (and improved the technology to decrease the risk). But the batteries were heavy and need avionics technicians to service them. So they improved the lead acid batteries and introduced STC's that allowed operators to remove the temperature sensors. But the lead acid batteries were only good for a few years (and were still heavy) and couldn't be serviced and had to be thrown out after they failed to pass the capacity tests (85%).

So now we have lithium ion batteries. What happened to Nickel metal hydride technology? Too heavy? Not enough capacity? And what about Nickel zinc technology? (1.6V per cell versus 1.2 for NiCd and NiMh). American design....... Totally safe......Environmentally safe too. But wait capacity...........just not what the engineers wanted..........

I worked with pilots who have long since retired but could still remember having the occasional thermal runaway. It was one of their biggest fears.

Look up A123 battery systems. These were by far the best compromise between performance and safety - these suckers could take a lickin and not get all "fire in your face" about it. However they did weigh twice as much as LiPo or LiIon although packed a better punch with less voltage sag over a charge. Oh well - Obama and his crazy ideas about making alternate energy a reality...

Morning paper ran a story about a plausible cause of the battery problems:

"It's likely that burning lithium-ion batteries on two Boeing 787 Dreamliners were caused by overcharging, aviation safety and battery experts said Friday, pointing to developments in the investigation of the Boeing incidents as well as a battery fire in a business jet more than a year ago.

An investigator in Japan, where a 787 made an emergency landing earlier this week, said the charred insides of the plane's lithium-ion battery show the battery received voltage in excess of its design limits."

That'd be a darn sight less messy (charger fault) than if it was a fundamental design or quality problem with the batteries.

Bit of both actually. I'm looking for a battery for my homebuilt and I just found out about Aerovoltz batteries!!

The 12 cell aerovoltz is LiFePo (Lithium Iron Phosphate) type. The new design is not dangerous like regular LiPo batteries. They won't catch fire or spontaneously combust. The power output is INSANE on these batteries. They have various sizes. The one I'm looking at is a 12 cell. Measures 4.5 x 3.5 x 3.5 Inches and puts out a whopping 410 Cranking amps!!!! The best part, weight is about 2.5 lbs!!!!! the battery I was originally looking at installing is closer to 15 lbs!!! And it's fully compatible with an airplane charging system, although they recommend "balance" charging the battery once in a while to maximize it's life. They are priced cheaper or the same as regular aviation batteries. Warranty is 3 years! They have received DOT approval and I believe are working on certification as well.

The 16 cell one measures about 1/2" bigger all around and puts out 500 cranking amps!!!

I am IMPRESSED with this battery!!!
