Webster Memorial Trophy Competition

Post by It's the Pitts »

I was just informed about this competition today.

I went to the net to find out more about this. From what I can tell, you must have a pilot licence (PPL or CPL), have not been employed professionally in the last 5 years.

You have to fill out an application form and send them $100. Then after you have completed this, you must set up a flight test with a DFT. He/She then chooses the best person in that region. They then go to the finals, in Saskatoon, and compete for the Trophy in a rented A/C.

The prize:

1. Two tickets any destination that Air Canada flies ( If they are still around)
2. The title of the best amature pilot in canada
3. An interview with Air Canada after you have met certain qualifications. (just like the rest of us peasants)

What do you Guys and Gals think?

I dunno, I had the opportunity to do it but didn't bother. To me, it just seems like it's more about bragging rights for arrogant bastards than anything else. I was more concerned about getting a job, not seeing how I stack up against other guys/gals. No employer really gives a rat's a$$ when they see it on a resume. That being said, I don't know sh!t, so don't listen to me.

The Webster isn't about resumes or interviews, although some use that as a selling point. Bottom line, it's an opportunity to challenege yourself as a pilot and meet some other great people.

I did it in 2001. It's pretty impressive how a group of people comes together from accross the country for about 4 days, you have a few beers, tell a few stories, you do two flight tests and a written test, and then there's a banquet on the Saturday night.

Consequently, a lot of the guys there were the ones that were working ramps and docks, or still working on their license...good guys that would get an interview because they deserved one anyways, so that's not that big a deal. Hell, the guy that won never even used his passes.

The Webster is a peice of Canadian aviation history, and it's not something you have to win to be proud of. I don't think anyone who participated at the national level has anything negative to say about it. I strongly encourage anyone interested to pursue it, it is definately worth your time and effort.

If I were an employer, I would respect that these people voluntarily challenged themselves.

I made the finals back in 98. Great experience, you get to meet quite a few good people, (some of which are in positions of influence). You really have nothing to lose, so I'd say go for it.

If enough people send me the $100 I'll get you the same prizes, a medal inscribed with "Worlds Greatest Pilot", plus a winged jackalope to hang above the mantle.

Its not about prizes, thats what poker derbys are for...

And DA900 excuse me... Loser of the year?? Lets see, did you try out and not make the provincials?? Be nice now...

I participated in the finals in 1996, and although I did not win the final "trophy"... I can honestly say it was one of the most memorable aviation experiences I've ever had, and I have been flying commercially ever since.

My fondest memories are the people... So many interesting new friends and contacts that I still remember well, although 8 years ago. I'm especially sorry to hear about the passing of Eunice, the program administrator back then.

No one will ever regret taking this great opportunity if given the chance.

You should be challenging yourself to do your best every time you get in an airplane. So far, I've never jumped in and thought, jeez, I think I'll do things half-assed today.

Ha ha, sweet! As long as I can put it on my resume in really big bold letters, I'll send my cheque in the mail today!

I participated in the finals out in Victoria,BC back in 1994.
With special permision from the DFO of AC,I was allowed to ride jumpseat on an AC A-320 and DHC-8 ,which was pretty cool for a low time PP.
Met alot of nice people and was introduced to Kokanee. :P

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no

After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.
