WestJet Passengers Riot Over Perky Crew

A WestJet Calgary-to-Toronto (YYC-YYZ) flight was forced to make an emergency landing in Winnipeg after passengers became unruly and refused to sing Happy Birthday to a flight crew member.

Winnipeg Police and RCMP were called out and waiting for the Boeing 737 as it taxied to a vacant runway, and Transport Canada officials say 11 passengers were removed and charges are pending. Passengers from the rerouted flight waiting to reboard at Winnipeg International Airport (YYY) say the 3 cabin crew members were "overly enthusiastic" and "wouldn't stop with the creepy smiling thing."

"I felt like I was trapped in an episode of Glee," said one businessman who asked not to be identified. "First they sang "Good morning to You, Good morning to You, We're all in our places, With sunshiny faces..." like a dozen times until everyone had stowed their bags in the overhead compartments and taken their seats. Bugger off!"

Police say four passengers face Assault With A Weapon charges, one involving a thrown Egg 'N' Sausage Onion Bagel from Tim Hortons, allegedly carried on to the flight. One crew member was treated and released by EMS after having a Peak Frean Shortbread Finger removed from his nasal passage, allegedly placed there by a disgruntled passenger.

"It wasn't even the flight lady's damn birthday," said Thelma Gor, a Mississauga-based beautician and pedicurist who admits she flung her Pretzel Straws during the heat of the confrontation. "I flew the same flight last week and they said it was Mindy's birthday then too. She must be 90 by now."

Passenger Ward Dungle said he just wanted a quiet flight to go over some notes but became agitated with the "almost constant push to make us all act giddy."

"Getting us to put our trays in the upright position to do seat Yoga was the topper for me," he said after being released from police custody. "I saw red and just wanted to chap slap that Chad dude with his "I'm an owner" happy crap."

I loose my mind on every WJ flight, fly AC whenever I can... so much nicer for the regular traveller. That was hilarious, we laughed hard at the morning meeting on that one.

This story is obviously in jest but it does, like most humour, have some truth to it. For the most part I've found WJ to be good, but I've been on 1 or 2 flights where you'd just prefer them to drop the overly-happy/fake attitude and just get on with what they have to say and leave me be! AC crews seem to be more professional in their attitude and I've got great service from them. I do fly WJ more for what it's worth!

Not quite sure on this one.......

Seems to me there must be a few ex-Royal F/A's with WJ now (and I have heard a few stories like this in the past - oh they were a happy bunch (the FA's).....

Did a couple of trips to YYT hast year with WJ(price was right) and the FA/counter staff stand-up grade C comic routine wasn't there at all, even did an early morning from YHZ where you usually hear the "chatter".

Not sure what is worse. The bad jokes at West jet or the some of the grumpy lifers at AC. It does annoy when they tell you with AC that they are primarily there for your comfort and safety. Then they close the curtain and hide behind it for most of the flight. They both have their faults but i agree the game playing gets real annoying real fast.

This is what happens when we let every scum bag on the face of the earth get on an airplane. If you're to f****d to travel by car, bus, or train then it seems you can get on an airplane. I just hope one day it will be high class people traveling by air again and not people that think they have a right to be on an airplane.

Wetjet should be bit more professional and little bit curtious to ALL passenger. Not every passenger is flying for leisure, he/she might be going from point A to point B to meet their family member or a friend in hospital / or going to attend funeral of their loved ones. Last thing they would like to see someone dancing around up and down the isle and pretending to be very excited about their job. They sholud keep their Sh**ty A** jokes to them selves and provide the service they are being heired for .....(by the pax).
