Finding a wreck that's been submerged for 80 years

Post by Billie T. »

Hello Everyone,

I've been researching a number of plane crashes in northern Ontario, Canada and I am wondering if anyone could help me by answering the following questions.

1. If a Junkers W.33fi was submerged in fresh water lake for 80 years, would the metal be totally corroded?

2. What about any paint or identifying labels on the body of the plane?

3. Are there any mechanical devices - besides magnets – that are used for detecting metal objects in water?

Thank you in advance for any help that you can provide.

Bill Thompson

The Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association based out of Tillsonburg Ontario, has a Dive Recovery Team that might be able to answer all your questions.

Keep in mind, if the airplane has been submerged for more than 30 years or so, the engine may not start. Just saying.

For the most part , unless this aircraft is deeply submerged, it will be pretty badly decomposed.
You should really weigh the value of raising vs dollars spent .
At 80 years old the wood will be almost all gone. Depending on the water acidity level, zebra mussles , currents that can create sand blasting etc the aluminium may be as fragile as pie crust.
On top of that you must consider the condition as per the incident that put it in the lake in the first place
The wreck may be good for a diorama but in most cases very little get used in a flying restoration .
However , if it is a very rare aircraft or one that may have no examples in Museums, then it could be worth raising

Good luck with the expidition if you decide to try and keep us posted on the progress.
