I don't know what to make of this news story other than to say it's a very risky move on the part of Porter.

wow.
Everything is possible. It will be interesting to see the political maneuvering surrounding the island airport thing, if that's the way they want to go that is.

I don't know, they've built a growing customer base; this seems like a logical next step and growth.
Aside from that it will be great to see the first airline in Canada to bring on the new C series which I believe will be proven to be a very competitive a/c.

But under the terms of Tripartite Agreement, the only jet aircraft traffic allowed at the Island airport is for MEDEVAC flights. Pamela McDonald, Toronto Port Authority spokeswoman, said those rules will remain in effect for the duration of the agreement and there are no plans to seek amendments at this time.

This is great news. Canadian company flying exclusively Canadian planes. I'm really curious to see the actual performance numbers of the CSeries and the new purepower engines. Go Bombardier and Go Porter.

I fear this may be a case of history repeating itself.
This reminds reminds me an awful lot of Wardair's expansion plans in the late '80s.
I hate to say it but, I think Bean's assessment of the situation over on the AEForum is unfortunately the most likely scenario.

what's the noise signature on something similar? if the pure power noise levels will be anything like modern bizjets, there shouldn't be much case to keep then new jets out of the island.

The loudest on the Island is probably Ornge, followed by the Q. I think the definition of noise for Toronto Island residents depends on what they might need (medivac late at night), and everything else. Condo owners along the lake is another issue and seem to have more clout than island residents (boring airshows now), though employees that live there say the streetcars make more noise then aircraft landing at YTZ.
Besides military, not sure what the largest aircraft, or loudest, is to land on YTZ.

The loudest thing on the Island by a factor of several is Robert Deluce's own 185 on floats, and he well knows it. It's deafening, even from the mainland ferry dock.

The Piaggio is loud, but there is another that is worse. Not sure what aircraft but it reminds me of an A7 (for us military types) with props...a vacuum cleaner on steroids. A regular at the Island and just painful even with the ear protectors.

Don't see how this is possible at YTZ.
The Landing Distance req'd at MLW is quoted at 4400'. Add to that the 60% factor and you're looking at 7333'. Throw some rain on there and you're now looking at 8433' to be legal to dispatch to the island.
This is a publicity stunt.
Or, they have no intention of operating them in/out of YTZ.

FYI, it's fine so long as your alternate airport meets the dispatch factored landing distance requirments.

FYI, it's fine so long as your alternate airport meets the dispatch factored landing distance requirments.
I stand corrected. I still don't see them ever operating at YTZ, though.

He also predicted "Porker Air", as he called it back in 2006, would never fly...
Back in 2006, there were 26,000 passengers travelling trough YTZ. In 2012, that number has now topped 2 million annually. So the airport isn't going anywhere and Porter owns the airport infrastructure and owns 90% of the slots. The C series will allow for further passenger and destination growth as the tunnel is opened and the airport "facilities" are further improved.
