Interesting video.

I flew PH-PEP in 2003 at least I think it was 2003.

Really? Do you now Dirk Evers? (pilot in the video)

No I don't know Dirk Evers.

I flew PH-PEP when Bert Huizenga the owner of Wings Over Holland owned it, Bert and I did a lot of flying together.

Could someone pass on the message to the owner,
that he needs to pull the smoke oil lines from the
exhaust and clean the nozzles out with a needle
rattail file?

What happens is that over time, carbon builds up
and restricts the flow.

A few minutes cleaning the nozzles, and he will get this:

If the wind is calm, with a good smoke system you
ought to be able to make the airfield go IFR

Look at videos by Skip Stewart and Sean Tucker.
Those guys know how to make good smoke.

Now why, if you are performing aerobatics at an airshow would you want the field to go IMC?
It seems like it kind of defeats the whole purpose of performing for a crowd.

why ... would you want the field to go IMC?
Because you CAN!

Because when you turn smoke on, you shouldn't look like you have engine trouble. You should look like SMOKE is ON! I agree that looks a little anaemic.

It's not hard to make a good smoke system - and
you don't need an exotic aircraft to put it on.

I helped a friend of mine put a smoke system on
his RV-8 (cost $210, weight 2.5 lbs empty) and
it's AWESOME!

Actually comes in handy when you want someone
to see you - just flick the smoke on for a couple
seconds, and there is a giant white arrow in the
sky, pointing at you

I love smoke. Took off yesterday. Pulled vertical
at the end of the runway and couldn't resist flipping
the smoke switch on, drawing a nice vertical line in
the sky. Nosed over and hovered motionless at the
top of the vertical, about a 30 degree nose up
pitch attitude, walking it through a full power stall,
just pouring smoke down underneath me. After
a few seconds, got bored, flicked the smoke off
and drove off.

Another fun thing is to run smoke through a torque
roll, and tailslide rolling backwards, down into a cloud
of your own smoke.

I know, David Suzuki, Al Gore and Arlo Speer hate me.
Got that.

Could I put one in my Slingsby?

I thought it might help if the smoke hung around to see what my loops look like.

Say what about this smoke? It's keep on hanging in the sky (almost no wind) the Sea Fury, that's what I call good smoke trail....
Never saw smoke doing this before (smoke-rings)

Don't see why not. Electrical is simple. Mechanical
and plumbing is not rocket science. Not sure about
what paper you will need. On a homebuilt, no paper
required.

Most complicated thing about a smoke system is
the vent line. To make it work under negative G, I
might humbly suggest that you take a vent off the
top of the tank, then run the tube below the bottom
of the tank, then up again above the tank.

That sounds weird, but draw the picture, turn it
upside down, and you will understand.

For negative G inside the tank, I use a flex flop
tube with a brass "donkey dong" screwed on at
the end, with an o-ring at the top to avoid bashing
the inside of the tank.

In addition to a pump, you will need a solenoid in
series to stop siphoning. Run flex hoses to the
exhaust. Don't put them too high - newbie error.
Run the right smoke oil, instead. Installing them
too high will cause a power loss - backpressure.

How much smoke you get, is a function of the
gallons per minute that you choose. This is
easy to test. Hook up a battery charger on
the ground, turn the master and the smoke
oil pump on, and measure how fast it takes
to fill a one gallon bucket.

One day I was sitting behind a guy at an airshow in Holland who was flying a highly modified Pitts and there was almost no wind.

He lined up and as soon as he opened the throttle turned on the smoke.......I flew eight years in the air show circuit in Europe and never ever saw so much smoke come out of a smoke system....the airport and everything for forty miles went zero zero....

....it was awesome. :smt040

Reason #17 for installing a smoke system:

So you can this:

An experimental / 337 smoke system is simple.
A holley 125gph pump. A holley nitrous solenoid valve , a flop tube in a 5 gallon tank of NOCO BLOT50HT oil, a T fitting ,a couple of pieces of 1/4 od stainless bent in a Z shape, flair one end other goes into 1/4 hole in exhaust, couple of hose clamps.. easy and foolproof. As CS points out injectors require yearly cleaning otherwise they slowly plug.

On addition to being fun can be used to aid vis. More than once ive put out a burst to help another pilot spot me in the curcuit.

Following a 1500ft smoke trail down from
a hammerhead... priceless !

Yeah, I love it when your leading edges are
all smeared with smoke droplets
