Re: so you want to live up North.....
That's why you either negotiate cost of living into your salary, work for a place that provides food and housing or stay south in a basement apartment while waiting for NASA to call.
To anyone thinking of going to work up there, don't let this deter you. Just view this as education before you accept the salary!

Plus, its a Colonel Sandy free zone for what that's worth!Colonel Sanders wrote:No, not really. Not ever. Thanks anyways,so you want to live up North

Given my own devices, nothing North of about 35 degrees Latitude is fine for me thank you very much!
No Col. Sandy, no P.J. either in Nunavut. Must be a pleasant and agreeable place then.

I knew it was expensive but never actually looked into how expensive it actually was.

The price of food is ridiculous up here still even if that video is 4 years old, its not far off. Work a rotation, stay in staff house and your golden. Bring up booze and food when you come each rotation and you have nothing to worry about. It's not bad at all !

Those chickens are great. At my college pub you drank for free if you could eat a whole one in less than 30 minutes. I won but got kicked out for fighting and being intoxicated about half an hour later.

Re: so you want to live up North.....
There's not much cargo destined for the south, so pricing needs to offset the cost of flying up and back. Not cheap.
Spent three years up north. Had a gas. No regrets.

Re: so you want to live up North.....
Speaking of gas it's ironically the one thing that tends to be cheaper up north than down south

Re: so you want to live up North.....
I didn't think the prices were that bad. But then, I used my brain and recognized that there's no Breyers or Doritos factories nearby, so naturally things would cost more when you have to haul them thousands of miles for a relatively miniscule market.
People are just kinda sheltered now. It's sad that they think because they can buy crap at Walmart for cheap that it represents a better lifestyle or something.

Imagine the price of groceries before the white man arrived on the continent!
But seriously, I don't know why some entrepreneur hasn't woken up to the obvious and got smart about shipping food up there and exploiting the local food sources. People have been living up there for thousands of years and the did it without Doritos.

I used to see milk for 7$ for 2 litres, while a bottle of rye was the same price as it was in Toronto! This in Inuvik

A bit like a $2.50 bottle of water down here, compared to the pop at $1.00...Doc wrote:I used to see milk for 7$ for 2 litres, while a bottle of rye was the same price as it was in Toronto! This in Inuvik
Mix just takes up space anyway.

Living in the North is not that different than living in Afghanistan. One has to adjust his habits to what is available cheap locally. Potatoes are cheap here, but forget Doritos. Fry your own, it is tastier!
Re: so you want to live up North.....
A common misconception. However, mix (or more specifically sugar which is a simple carbohydrate) is only 4 calories per gram. Alcohol, at 7 calories/gram is only slightly less than fat (9 calories/gram.)Expat wrote: And mix gives you all the calories!![]()
So really, the mix and the booze both contribute nicely to a fat pilot ass and man udders.
As you were.

Re: so you want to live up North.....
A mathematically misleading argument, since a glass of pop has about 39 grams of sugar, which has 156 calories. A normal drink has about 14 grams of alcohol, 98 calories. So the mix comprises well over half of the total calories in the beverage. You can have a lot more fun if you omit the pop and stick to the booze.Slats wrote:A common misconception. Come on, who you gonna believe: "Mathematics" or some random guy/self proclaimed expert on the Internet?
In the vein of awesome things seen at the northern store, came across this gem in Arviat....or maybe Rankin:
